My entries in this years anual Camera South photo contest in Mobile are being judged today. I took Best of Show and first place in two categories last year, but the catergories and the judges have changed this year.
One of the judges, Walter Beckham, I had a chance to meet and spend some time with about seven years ago. He seemed highly critical of my work at that time and even went as far as to suggest that I stay with rustic landscapes, which seemed to be the only examples of my work that met his approval.
I didn't enter any rustic landscapes.

I hope the judging is anonymous (the judge doesn't know who did what). Sometimes prejudices can get in the way otherwise. With more than one judge it does usually balance out.
Good luck.

The question is: If you take Best of Show, will you mail Judge Beckham ?
Good Luck! |

how can he say that? Look at his port work...it's unique to the 1800's! IMHO you got this guy beat hands down.
though I do like him, I just like you better. |

?
No. Hopefully my work has improved enough in that time where it should hold its own. I purposely avoided the Places catagory, and submitted nothing in B/W because I know that one judge is partial to both. At least he seemed to be when he looked at my work a while back. The other judges I have never met so I have no idea what preferences they have.

That's all the more reason some judges might be harsh when judging another person's work. But wth all respect, I do consider the man to be a good photographer and seven years ago his work was far superior to mine. I'd gladly put my work against his today.

I won the Board of Governors Award with this.
The only thing I won from the judges was a third in the Enviromental catetgory and an honorable mention in People. The Best of Show was won by an officer of Camera South with a grainy B/W. The officer also won first place in the Still Life category with a similar print.
The above image came in 32nd in the DPC competition I entered it in.

The very best of luck to you on this competition. Having seen some of your previous works... I am confident you will do quite well.

Did you have to title the images in this contest, and if so do you use the same title for the Mardi-Gras image?
Just wondering since it has a connection to the hurricane..(title wise)..

The real title for the image is Mardi Gras Unmasked. I don't know if they saw the titles during judging or not. I believe Mardi Gras originated in Mobile, so while the rest of the world may make a connection to New Orleans, people in Mobile think of Mardi Gras as, well, Mardi Gras.

Well done on the results, Martin. It seems you weren't too impressed with the winner's entries!

Not when I know the person who won Best of Show probably had a hand in picking the judges. No, and I wasn't impressed with the image either. There were images there that were better then what I entered, but few of them placed. The one that won Best of Show was a grainy, overprocessed, haloed, high contrast photo of a ballerina with blowed out details.
