I saw that, thanks. I just wanted to get a little more detailed on my logic there.

A thing about McDonalds....I heard in the news somewhere that a senator (something?) in California was trying to have McDonalds and other fast food restaurants put a warning label on their fries.....because when frying starch/potatoes to a high degree a dioxin (very cancersous toxin) is created and if consumed in large amounts can cause cancer/problems. Has anyone else heard something along these lines? I just heard it recently (on radio I think) and hadn't researched it. (yes, the news junkies researches stuff :)

Edit: spelling

One Article

short excerpt: "...McDonald's Corp. -- charging they failed to warn consumers about acrylamide, a chemical the state says causes cancer."

And another

California is the state and they want the cancer warning on chips and fries

And I heard the story originally on NPR

I was trying to avoid hijacking this post to talk about McDonalds. But since it's been brought up, I'll tell what I know.

Colyla inquired, and here's what I told her:

Had a friend who was an over-the-road truck driver. He was delivering a
refrigerated load of hanging beef in the summer heat. His truck broke
down and the cooler stopped.

By the time he got assistance, the cargo had been hot for days. He
opened the doors to investigate, and was bowled over by the stench of
rotting flesh.

This is a devastating loss for a trucking company, and so he called his
dispatcher for help. He assumed that she would set up a delivery to a
dog food factory to help allay an expensive loss of cargo.

She did find an alternative buyer and gave him directions to get there.
He arrived, only to discover that his truckload of rotted beef had been
sold to...you guessed it...McDonald's hamburger plant. Apparently their
burgers are a blend of rotted beef, regular meat, and God knows what
else. I've heard other rumors as well, but this was from a reputable
source.

On top of that, McDonald's has a high standard for the size and
appearance of potatoes for their fries. In order to achieve such "quality"
their potato farmers use excessive quantities of chemicals. I read an
article about this; and the farmers interviewed refuse to eat the toxic
potatoes that they grow. Instead, they raise a separate crop, of organic
potatoes, for their own consumption.

These two stories are enough to put me off McDonald's, and fast food in
general.

I knew there was a reason I didn't eat there. I bet if this is even remotely true in either case that it is fairly common practice among all the fast food places. Otherwise how could they stay competitive? Maybe not, but good enough reason for me to stay out of all of them anyway.

a blend of rotted beef...

this keeps coming back to my thoughts and then I think of Bears method of aging beef and wonder...is there a connection? Did Bear concoct McDogsh*ts method of beef aging? Is he some sort of genius? Or is Mickey Dees just gross?

I tend to lean towards the gross theory...

Jaysus... LOL

Aging meat to improve its tenderness has been around for eons. Some game is virtually inedible unless it has been properly aged. Look at it this way; the function of the digestive system is to break down foodstuffs into their components and absorb the nutrients from them, expelling the rest as waste. Not to be gross about it or anything, but it's possible to see rotted food as "pre-digested". In fact, this is exactly what some species do when they feed their young; they predigest food then spit it back up and feed it to the young ones. This is especially commonplace among birds. Mammals have a different system, of course; they manufacture their own milk, which is custom-tailored by nature to provide nutrition tot heir young and is easy for them to digest.

But I digress. Aging beef is properly done at controlled temperatures, like in a walk-in cooler or a refrigerator. You don't let it go anywhere NEAR far enough to be considered rotten, sheesh. IF it's true that a truckload of stench-ridden, rotten sides of beef was redirected to McDonalds, that's repulsive. However, I don't believe it. It sounds like an urban myth to me. In today's legal climate, it's inconceivable to me that McDonald's would be that stupid. And I'm no fan of the McD corporation either, far from it. But still...

Ha ha...bear_music...I thought of you, and your aged beef, when I posted this:) I don't blame you for your skepticism. However, I must say that having a father for a truck driver, and under the circumstances of being told this anecdote, I have great faith in it's accuracy.

If you want to know more, I can give reliable disgusting stories about orange juice and lemonaid too. I have enough information for "The Jungle" part two.

I'm glad though that people are actually calling the police, and that they actually respond.

Tires are considered "environmentally hazardous" now, and if you dispose of them responsibly you are charged a per-tire disposal fee. So assholes dump them straight back into the environment, how's that for good news?

Robt.

Sorry to get off topic... but the hazardous waste thing about tires brought a recent event to mind.

Is it just California or is everyone now paying an (environmental) disposal charge when you buy a new computer monitor? Is that for the monitor that I would have just bought or is it for the one they think I'm going to throw away? Is there a core charge on monitors?

I was looking at monitors the other day and asked the guy what the out the door cost was and when he said after Taxes and Disposal fee... I had to stop him right there. Just curious about that one...

ED: Awesome Job on the Roadside Clean-up by the way. It seems it would be a never ending one though...people are just so rude with their trash.

As you wish... but you may have to change the title of this thread to "Categories of disgusting foodstuffs". Here is the email I just sent to bear_music.

OK, you asked for it;)

Lemonade: When limes get old they turn yellow. My father once delivered
a truck-load of (way) over-ripe limes to a lemonade factory (because
they resembled lemons). Not as bad as the rotten beef, but still yucky.

Orange Juice: I recently heard a second-hand story from the driver of
an orange juice transporter who swore that the last portion of a tanker
truck of orange juice is dumped because it is pure maggots.

There is probably more, and if you ever want to write a book about it,
I'll be glad to help you with the research.

Cheers,
Roxanne

"The Jungle" could easily be written again in today's world.

Looking to re-place the third monitor on my system I ran across the same thing. If I wanted them to 'dispose' of my 'old' monitor they were going to charge me a fee. But if not, there was no fee.

If I take a TV or monitor to the 'Transfer Station' here in town they charge a 5.00 dollar fee to accept anything with a crt in it. Hazardous waste disposal fee they call it.

Oh that's not so bad Roxanne...it could be worse...got anything better? If not I suggest you call your dad and tell him we need good fodder to ponder upon.

I'm with Chris on that one, Roxanne. You gotta do better than that. Ever read "The Octopus" by Frank Norris?

Keep 'em coming...

OK, I fold. The truckload of beef was my best story.

The only one I have left is that when a load of sunflower seeds is crawling with bugs it is rejected and sent to be made into sunflower oil. But we already know that we eat bugs all day long.

That's the extent of my personal anecdotes. I need to call my dad anyway.

I haven't read that Robert, but I will now.

Who hangs out in places like that? Why, people who don't have a place of their own, that's who. It's more-or-less universal, at least in this country; there are always a few places in every area where the kids go after dark to drink and smoke and hang out with each other.

After reading this I understand better what you're getting at, and it's a fair point. But all I got from your initial post was "Those damn young people... They all just drink, smoke, and make a mess." That is a generalization I hear way too much around my local area, and in general too. It's only a minority of young people who do it, but everyone assumes all young people are the same and I just get sick of being prejudiced against for no good reason. Also, even in situations where there is no connection at all to young people, someone manages to blame us for everything.

Alienyst: What typo? ;)

I know this might sound like a dumb question, but are there trashcans at these spots? Most people WILL use cans as long as they are there, and they will overflow them and there will be spillage, but atlesat it will be in one general area.

No...no trash cans at these spots. They are just pull offs on the road side. Not parking areas per se. Only one of them actually has a grass divider between it and the road.

I really enjoy the fact that when you are on top of the mountain and have to go either into NY or MA, that when you come down the MA side the road is clean and so are the pull offs. When you go down the NY side the road is littered and the pull offs are disgusting. One of them is used by deer hunters every year to dispose of the corpses/bones/ remainders after butchering. I have a picture of a bunch of deer heads lying on the ground in front of a discarded TV like they are wathing it. After I get back I will see if I can find it. Or not...
