I have recently advertised an item in one of our national sellers mags called "loot"
This is the reply I received after giving him more details.
Hello Paul,
A cheque for £1400 has been raised and mail to you, once you receive the cheque you are deduct you cost price and send the excess payment on the cheque to my shipping agent who is coming for the pick up of the 'Cobbler's Patcher at your location.
Regards,"
Cheung.
The item is only £150, good one eh :)
Any chance of catching this guy or put him out of business?

This type of scam is very common. I get some version of this letter almost everytime I post something for sale.
These people operate from countries where it's virtually impossible to catch them.
Anytime I get one of these, I just erase it and move on.

Yes, run to the local authorities. The check is a forgery, and by the time that's found out, you've forwarded the remainder of the "funds" to them, they have your money, you have nothing. That's the scam.

It's called vanity press. I doesn't work if you don't pay them. It is not really a scam. They do send you the book. Everyone who enters wins, but some people are so desperate to see their images, poetry, short stories or names in print, that they pay the money and proudly show off their picture in the book to any friend or family member unlucky enough to pick it up off of the coffee table.

Yeah, there is another place that does the same "see your name and picture published" for a fee. I don't care if I'm some bound leatherette book. UGH But I guess some people dig it.
No thanks. |

Thats true too...I'm not that vain to do so. If EVERYONE wins, it's not a true competition as I thought at first. I don't think I have to pay to be published like so. Usually, Publishers would have to pay the photographer for thier copyright. In return, you get published...So, in my book it's a scam...However, if one wants to pay out over 60-125 bucks so they can 'look" legit" go for it...but, I just hope that they are truthful with themselves.

Little bit off the subject of photography, but aren't the "Who's Who" books somewhat like that? True, someone nominates you to be published in one of the books, but you the nominee has to pay for the priviledge.

Yes, it would be nice gesture and privilege to be published next to "who's who of photography" I wouldn't mined having a photo that I shot next to a famous photographer. However, not next to shot a soda can in a ally with direct sunlight at high noon, that's snap shot (crap)...ANYONE can be published in this book, if you pay...It's not one of the type of collections of photos who'd fine at Barnes and Nobles for 150 bucks....It's a scam to get your money....

A friend of ours who runs a b&b got a booking for 6 people over the bank holiday weekend and then received a cheque for too much before the date they were due to arrive. The person asked for the over pay to be returned. Obviously my friend realised this was a scam and ignored it but it meant she was left with rooms empty over the holiday period when she had turned others down. Meant it cost her a lot of money!
Also heard of dog breeders being caught like this - puppies paid for and amount sent "to cover shipping please send cheque to cover over pay" .
Watch out these people are very clever! |
