With the completion of Shoes it is very apparent that there is a huge number of entries that have no explanation or comment about how the shot was developed, what the technique was, what the frustrations were and how you feel about the result.

It seems that the great value of DPC for everyone other than the top 3 in each challenge is in learning how to get better. This we get from sharing all of the above.

I would like to suggest to the SC that the "Photographers comments" field in the database is made a . It should be easy to do via a property switch in setup.

Cheers,
Brett

Even if it's required people will still put "N/A" or "dsafhdjl" if they don't want to spend time on it.

If you want or need an explanation, why don't you send a polite message to the person(s) whose photo interests you? It can only be the best form of flattery to acknowledge your admiration of an image and your interest in knowing the technique!

No one has the obligation to pre-satisfy your curiosity by filling in the notes section. I, too, enjoy reading the notes others provide but I'm certainly not going to demand them! It is because of those who have (freely) offered their explanations that I have added many notes to my own images. However, I'd strip my notes away in a minute if this site suddenly "required" me to explain myself.

not everyone feels the need to explain their art to the general public. sometimes the mystery is more fun. learning is part of the game here, but it's not the only thing.

with over 43000 registered users, it's difficult to REQUIRE anything. it's like herding cats!

i would suggest that you get to know the site a little bit better before complaining too much. as KaDi said, if you want some specific information you are welcome to ask for it from the individual users.

I actually did... see this thread...

How did that happen?

Sometimes a mental picture is better then a photo.

Whoa ... I didn't expect a flameout :)

If we are passionate about our art, then don't we want to share that with others? As a participant in DPC, I certainly would like to share in the design, aspirations and challengers that photographers have with their submissions. The photographers comment is the way this is done.

I'm sorry I don't inderstand why everyone feels so threatened about this as to start flaming. There's nothing threatening about the idea I thought. It sems like a courtesy to others to make a short comment.

The "required" concept is not onerous, it is just a programming switch in the database setup that makes an entry of some kind needed before you can submit your entry. I just thought it informative and fun.

You haven't been flamed.
Grow up!
(Now you've been flamed...
...by a safety match.)
=0!

You haven't been her long enough if you call this reaction "flaming". This is mild. No one likes something forced on them and that is what you have proposed. My attitude and those of many others here is I don't have to tell you anything. If you ask, fine. If you tell me I have to tell you, sorry you're SOL.

OK, let's give the guy a break. I like reading comments too...but I know that you can't require it. It wasn't a bad suggestion and at the very least can act as a reminder that people out there are interested.

I got lazy with my D&L picture and didn't post anything.

I thought it was a fairly obvious technique (CD behind a light source), but, lo and behold, nearly half the comments were "how'd you do this?". I felt like a doofus with that big old "NA" glaring in the comment section...

I guess the point here could be that all this is volunteer. And the majority of the people here are very generous and will volunteer to answer any question you have. They will actually go completely out of their way to help someone ( I could tell you some stories) but, being on here as I have found can be very time consuming,(in a good way) sometimes you don't have time to do everything you'd like on here, vote, submit, follow threads, learn from the mentor groups, or you would be spending all your time here and not taking pictures. But if you ask for a specific "how did you do it" you are almost guaranteed a quick complete response.
But,remember, it is their choice to share their secrets or not. Someone who is doing photography for a living may not want competion on a specific technique that they have mastered that makes them stand out from the rest. I'd say that is a very rare if ever case here though, because I have gotten complete answers on how to do the coolest things by just asking.

You know you can edit the comments section any time after challenge ends, and add all that info?

You know, I wasn't sure how. I added a post-challenge comment, but didn't know how to get it up top (although I'd seen other people do it)

Acces the image through your portfolio instead of through your profile; you'll be taken to an editing screen.

I'll put a little different spin on this...

There are very many postings of beautiful scenic compositions. Please tell us where you have taken us. Sometimes I'm left looking at a shot saying "what a beautiful place, wonder where that is"

Take the extra 30 seconds and share
