Nemesise, I definitely understand where you're coming from as I'm getting the same comments. The newest one complains, "It's just bad! Try to improve your creativity," which doesn't help, considering that I actually LOVE my photo, and that's it not of an actual tree branch.

I don't know whether to be pleased or dismayed with my score. I think that by the time people see mine, it's their 300th image perhaps and they just hit that ole five button for effort and don't take into account that this was a basic editing challenge. Sigh.

done voting, woohoo!

Took lots of breaks, they all started running together.

after seeing a whole darn Forest of branches, anyone who gets a 5 from me is lucky. ;-)

well i have my favorite so i'm indifferent to my score .

I am a sorter, and i have found once i have my images sorted, doing a few from branches and when i get sick of looking at trees going over and doing a few from HC is helping a lot.

Entering a contest on DPC is so rewarding.... I have already learned so much from this, my first entry. Thanks to all that comment

Mine didn't have a thing to do with wood or trees and still:

eh.

I'm so sick of being mediocre. Some people get blues like two or three times in a row. I'll settle for just breaking a 6.

I guess the key is, don't forget that you love the photo you submitted. That's the mood I'm going with. :)

What I don't understand is that I have 12 comments from people saying how much they loved my photo, and thought it was unique for this challenge, and even a couple of people who said they voted it a 10, however my score is staying in the low 5's? WTF?
09/09/2005 03:03:55 AM · #164
I think people have developed a DPC version of 'snow blindness' after voting on so many branches...they're hitting any old button;)

This is normal. Happens to me all the time. Most commenters, on average images, are favorable or they just won't comment at all. It's rare to get comments, in other words, that say "ho hum, 5". So the ones you're hearing from are the ones that just happen to really like your shot, and there aren't that many of them. For most people, it's a middle of the road image. Easily 2/3 of my entries fall into this category, even though at the time I enter them I think they are quite original and potentially high scorers. I've learned to live with it.

The only time I get peeved (and not very peeved, at that) is when I post entries that are on topic, technically excellent, and (IMO at least) aesthetically competent, yet they end up in the high 4's or low 5's. My "dairy" shot was a case in point; I have no idea why that shot didn't easily finish at the 5.5 level, at least, but it barely made it over 5.1... But I digress...

Just a comment. I took more care focusing on the branch texture of my entry, and everybody seems to think that the rest of the image isn't good. I also took past comments and applied them to this entry, and I am still doing bad. There is no pleasing anyone. I like the picture, I think it is a warm fuzzy happy picture, and the heck with all these badger up their butts voters.

Ok breaking annomitity a bit on my second entry here... I am getting comments like.. wheres the branch and I dont get it. the challange states to show a branch, bank branches, metophoric branches, be creative.
By defination a branch is somthing that splits off of a base or is arm like, such as military branch, or one stream splitting off off another, veins that pump blood in an animal or water in a plant, a crack in the cement that splits in 2 directions, a road with a fork, a large wire spliiting into several smaller ones. While there are some beautifully composed images to many of them seemed obvious such as a new branch of the family tree or the militay, or banks or trees...So I went alittle creative and focused on the not so obvoious but the "branch" is there people just need to look. I dont mind the bad score if I thought it was because it was a bad photo, but when care is made to focus on a unique detail and peoples comments are oblivious to it... well it is frustrating to say the least, and all the comments are bagheads so I cand explain the branch to them.../sigh will keep trying.

Your right ladymonarda, it can be very stressful trying to find a medium that suits everybody. I make it easier by telling myself that DP is the home of some of the best Digital Photographers in the world. Everybody has there own little way of voting, some put creativity before clarity, and some put depth before color. That which doesn't kill us only makes us stronger, right? <-easier said, than actually applied, lol., Anyway you are right, you can't please everybody. However if you have an expensive camera, and a neat idea its fun to try.

Owe yeah, im not doing great either, so I feel you whole heartedly.

Well this is my third shot on DPC and I'm crawling ever so slowly up the 4's as each challenge passes. Who knows by Christmas I may break into the 5's. :)
Pity I only came up with this idea at the last minute and dumped my other 'standard' branch shots. Considering the horizon needs levelling, the sloppy cropping, and slap-dash appearance I guess my originality is the only thing that kept me from a ribbon. So I can be thankful for small mercies.

I gotta say for my first entry not to bad for being a novice i'm happy with what i got so far.
I like my shot, i originally went out into the wet wet forest looking for an old mossy tree (going for a shot of old earth say)
well i ended up walking through the kitchen with the light hitting my white table and thought "contrast"
My kid had a broken branch he brought in from outside, so after a few shots and adjusting exposure and so forth, i got the shot i was happy with.
As you can see only one comment so far, and reading this thread i see alot of people not happy cause nobody comments or understands their picture and what they were trying to achieve (me included my own fault).
The only thing i can say is we need to let people know what it is that we were trying to do, what the feel of the picture was supposed to be and so forth (mind you photography is art and people will always see something different thus the beauty of our art)
But if we need or want feedback we gotta give all of you something to work on.....

Doing better than I expected for my OOTB photo. I'm glad people are understanding the correlation to "branch".
