Today..some nasty mistake, virus, or just a normal everyday crash, killed my external hard drive and I could not access it at all. It would show up as being there, but no accessing was allowed, gave me an error everytime. There was no volume name, no size description....NADA!! I did some checking..over 5 hours, and found a program called ESS Fast File Recovery. //www.essdatarecovery.com Saved my life! If you ever run into this type of problem...remember this thread and link. Everything was backed up except for photographs taken in the last month...around 1500 or so that could not be replaced! I guess you could say I'm a happy camper now.

Thanks for listening to my little spill......

boy talk about being thankful....

I am not sure what i would do if my external HD died. I have my computer backed up on there, but also have lots of older images ONLY on the external. I mean to buy another external so that i have two copies of everything..... but haven't done it... :S am sitting on thin ice. I am not sure what is the best option though... everything on dvd's and an external, or two external drives.??

I try to backup every weekend but am not always completely faithful about it. My new reminder is that every time a thread shows up here about somebody losing a drive - that's my reminder.

gotta go.

Glad to hear that your files were recovered. It is a good idea to have some sort of file recovery software on hand, just in case. Sooner or later, it seems, a hard disk or CF card will decide to hiccup. Many file recovery programs can restore deleted or even formatted cards as well - however there is one VERY important point...

DO NOT WRITE ANYTHING ELSE TO THE CARD WHEN YOU HAVE A PROBLEM. This is key to recovering your stuff! If you ever have trouble with a card or disk, do not write anything else to it or you'll take a chance of losing that data forever.

Here are two more links to data recovery software. I highly recommend ontrack - it has saved me from dead CF cards and an accidentaly formatted iPOD. :)

Also, most Lexar CF card users should have a copy of the Lexar Image Rescue software preloaded on their new CF card.

Hope this helps.
