Perhaps at one time it was useful to show the average vote for those without cameras. But now it seem the number of voters in that group is so small that the number is no longer useful.
At least for the open challenges a more interesting number, to me at least, would be the average score from members and from nonmembers.
Just a thought...

I agree that the non-camera voters number is relatively insignifcant. But I don't understand whats to be gained by dividing the voters along member / registered user lines. Could you please explain further.

Hi coolhar,
The votes for member challenges and open challenges clearly show a different distribution of scores. Is that because of the different groups of people who vote on each or does it have more to do with the qualtiy of the images? Or is it more the expectation to see better images in the member challenges and therefore the voters more tolerant? I tend to think it is a combination of the ladder two reasons. I may be wrong.
What the numbers would do is show the non members the kinds of scores they can expect for their images when the join the membership crowd.
I also think there is a feeling that the members tend to be on average the "better" photographers and therefore their votes give a better measure of how the image is seen. If this is accurate, perhaps the breakdown can give people a better feel for the quality of their images that they don't get because most people don't seem to find the time to comment on the image during a challenge. |

I'd like to see that too.
Given the fact that a member has paid acutal money, it is likely he/she has more than a passing interest in photography. Non-members are more heterogeneous. They may also have more than a passing fancy, but they may not.
You will notice that the average score in the challenge results is different between member challenges and non-member challenges. |

OK, some of your reasoning sounds valid to me. But you have several factors intermingled. How are you going to tell which are at play? and how much of each?
And what will be the conclusion if the results are not consistent from one image to the next; and one challenge to the next? I wouldn't want to see people reading unfounded conclusions into the differences in scores from the two groups, and possibly a lot of hurt feelings from that.

You are right there are several factors intermingled. But few things are black and white.
There are also other risks. Perhaps those who are not members will feel that their votes are not as important. Perhaps someone will feel they should have gotten a ribbon as they had the highest score based on the votes of the members. But many of those same problems probably existed when the first dividing line was made between those with and without cameras.
I worry less about hurt feeling than giving useful information. The current with/without camera divide give essentially no information. Seem to me it should be dropped, so I am simply suggesting an alternative.
That alternative still does not deal with what to do for the members only challenges since non members cannot vote there.
