Hi All,

Went on a short drive over the weekend and when we came back to town the sky had the most unusual look to it.. if I could describe it in words it looked like the background clouds had been neatimaged smooth - very smudgey/plastic look, flat and yet.. I don't know.. rounded? and then over that were these small puffy clouds with fabulous curves and protrudences and lovely play of light and shadow over them. Anyway, I tried to capture them and it didn't really work out - 60mph + windshield = not so fantastic.

That said, here's one image that I played around with, I went for a dreamy surreal look, which I'm not entirely sure I captured - seems to look better in thumbnail than large size. I'd love any comments or suggestions though.

Lovely picture, would agree it looks better in thumbnail. Think that might be because it looks more detailed and sharper.

Would be interested to see this in colour if available, or were the colours to bland?

Its mostly a very light blue, not much definition at all. I think I'll try playing with it while leaving the color in and see what I can come up with for a comparison.

Thanks for taking a look!

Well I've worked on this for a few days but I can't seem to get something that I'm ga-ga for.. so this is what I've come up with for a color version. In the original, the sky is a very washed out blue (no polarizer) so I obviously adjusted in post processing. I'm not sure if it still retains the surrealistic look I was aiming for in the first version or not.

Can you post the original? Looks like it's worth playing with :-)

Have at it.

Here it is unaltered. No cropping, no resizing, reflections of the windshield and all. :)

How's this? I used healing brush to fix the window reflections and kept it full frame. Levels, selective color and hue/sat, plus some USM, took care of the rest. If you look at the sharpness possible, and compare it to the B/W version, you can see one of the pitfalls of B/W conversion; it's way too easy to get muddy/soft when doing those. I really like this sky shot, it's worth workign with in the original size.

It certainly looks more natural and easier on the eyes.

I'm not very good with post processing techniques, so my work is either not enough or too heavy handed. I work with Gimp also, so figuring out what I'm doing is a bit slow going.

I do like what you've done with the image, hopefully I'll be able to have similar success in the future AND the techniques used will become second nature to me!

It is a beautiful capture in itself, what bear_music has done to it explains why we want a tutorial from him ;-)

They are interesting clouds and your processing skills will improve. Your eye (which is more important) is good. That cannot usually be taught. The rest you can learn. One thing about cloud and sunset pictures- they usually need some subject to make them more interesting. Otherwise, they are like someone else's vacation pics- they become uninteresting after you have seen more than a few. Keep at it! You are off to a good start! Keep posting for suggestions and you will get good help and advice here. I am new here too.

To me, nature wins this one. I like the natural sky the best of the three.
