I don't think I've handed out so many 3s and 4s in my life.

Sorry to anyone who I gave a good score to..I can't vote on 20% of this challenge...

Wow, I feel better already.

I voted on all and only commented on 22%. I mean, please. I couldn't think of another word to say. I did give out two 10's and several 9's and 8's though. I hope they NEVER have such a limiting challenge like that again. WHEW!

I guess I am looking at this differently. Probably cause I haev so many shoes of my own, I don't find them boring. I am still voting on them and I have been staying on the high side so far. I think the more I hear bad on my own entry the more generous, understanding and objective I become to everyone else's entry. You would think I'd be feeling the opposite. LOL, I think we should have a challenge on "boots" now and see how many shoes wwe get.

And i did end up commenting on everything i marked under a 5 (which turned out just shy of 100) dispite it all.

And let me say - it was not easy. Judy is right, there are only so many words.

As this is/was my first voting session here, was wondering how some of you rate photos here. Can see no way there should be a majority of 1's or even 2's, no matter what criteria you use, but apparantly it is possible. I looked at the catagory (shoes) and therefore the shoes -or boots, sandals, sneakers, whatever - had to be the MAIN focal point of the photo to get a high score, then the quality of the photo made up the point where the score stopped. I did not give any ones, or tens, as I did not see a perfect photo, but I did not see any "black cow at midnight" ones either, hence no ones. Just my thoughts, and really would like to know yours. Well I noticed that I recieved a short comment which was along the lines of "Not again". I can only assume it refered to the type of shoe photographed. I agree there were a LOT of this particular type of shoe, though I also noticed that my score dropped along with the comment.

Now, to me, this is not fair. You may very well be fed up of looking at a particular kind of shoe, but that is what the challenge was titled, so get over it. I don't think it is a justified reason to give someone a low score.

Rant over.

Al - for some it is justified. Some people give up to 5 points for orginality. It isn't hard to be oringinal or creative with shoes - just a lot of people didn't take the times to think it out.
If your image looks like 10 other images, you can't blame the voter.

personally, and you'll find everyone's method different, i reserve 1, 2, and 3 for photos that i feel don't meet the challenge, with the merits of the photo determining the score :

1=what the heck?
2=boring photo
3=good photo

so you took a photo of shoes? you start with a 4 and move up from there :

4 = bad photo
5 = boring photo
6 = something interesting
7 = niffty
8 = wish that was my entry
9 = wow
10 = how'd you do that?

i'll usually revisit anything above a 6 or so and fine tune... it's a new system, but it works for me...

I totally agree that "Not again" is a useless comment, but seeing a similar photo for the 100'th time seems like a fine reason to lower the score. Part of any DPC challenge is to be creative and figure out how to stand out. If there are literally hundreds of very similar photos then they have clearly failed that part.

The answer is to make up your own set of criteria and use that as your system.
There are as many interpretations of a photo as there are viewers - everyone will get frustrated at times because they know they shot and entered a perfect 10 pic.
Individuality is common here but it frequently gets lower votes.
Thats my personal view

Thanks Kudzu, is basically the same as mine, except I start with 2, unless there had been a completely terrible one, as the black cow, or white cat in snow, or similar, which there was none. I kinda figured if I could tell what it was and what the photographer tried to do, would be worth a two for trying. But that is my thoughts and not others LOL. Still do not see how anyone could actually try to critique any group of photographs honestly and not put them in different scoring positions. Oh well, thanks again for answering Kudzu.
