If all you are looking for is the whitest whites and the blackest blacks, you will miss many great images. Yes, sometimes pretty and/or interesting can be high contrast. I will be keeping the challenge topic in mind while voting but I believe I may have a more general interpretation of the description than many.
Oh, wait, this is a score thread...
score 5+

I agree. Hoping people would have more of an open mind altho this is DPC and apparently open mindedness isn't for everybody. |
I also agree that a shot showing high contrast of subjects, not only of light fit the challenge as per the myriad of interpretations, it's just that some shots seem to represent neither. Are their any other interpretations that I am missing that could help me during the voting process?

beagle I tihnk you should go with what YOU feel is right. I think you already know the answer to your question but fear you might be waiting for conformation on your thoughts. Go with your instinct.

Never said they had to be blown out. They don't have to, but there has to be a marked range between dark and light, if that was the intention. Of course this works better in B&W than colour.
I think some people are confusing saturation with contrast. Some people seem to interpret them as the same, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, I guess. Pumping contrast in colour shots can have a similar impact as boosting saturation, whereas pumping contrast in black and white better highlights both ends of the lightness/darkness spectrum. That's what I've noticed in my very limited experience anyway.

I personally am looking for large differences between dark and light, wether it be color or black & white. I am rather torn on a few entries because the photo is so well done, but it's really stretching it to be classified as high contrast. I'm not one to dilute my opinions in challenges. When casting my votes, if you meet the challenge clearly, you only go up from that point. If I have to sit and ponder alot about what I am seeing, or if it meets the challenge....its not getting much more than a 5 or 6, I dont care how good the pic is. :)

I know how you feel. I only have six comments though... one of which essentially bashes my human subject and then has almost no other critical value. I'm amazed, in a bad way. |

But if you have to sit and ponder about what you are seeing then you've probably looked at it longer then normal and it sparked an emotion didn't it??? beit good or bad. I was looking at a shot an didn't like the shot at first then after looking at it for a couple of minutes I saw a lot more then I has realized and since I only vote once the persons score jumped +3 points in that time just by me looking and trying to figure it out.

For re regarding the B&W images if there are more shades of grey than there is black and white - it is not high contrast.
The greyscale bar at the bottom of the voting page IS NOT high contrast. Its a greyscale.
If you took the First box and the last box and lined them up, that would be high contrast.
If you have covered every box in the grey scale, you havent made a high contrast picture Imho.
High contrast in colour is a lot easier to judg, i think. Your looking for soild, conflicting colours - ie ones that cannot fade into each other.
Red and green are high contrast
Aquamarine and turquoise are not high contrast. |

Sometimes that is the case, but not always. I adjust my votes atleast 2 times per week. I make sure to look at photos I scored low the first time around another time, to be sure I didn't unfairly rate it low. Alot of them have come out of the (under 5) pile, and rise into the 7's and 8s. But it's gotta meet the challenge first and foremost. |

I can't understand why or HOW someone like Mandyturner can be sitting at a 4.9 with her photo. THAT IS RIDICULOUS! I've gone through about half of the entries and all I have to say is DAMN there are some nice photos! Common people vote on the artistic merit of the shot not to improve your scores!
Thank you please drive through!

So something like this is HIGH Contrast in your opinion.
To me this is a graphic, not a photo. IMO there has to be some gray or it is just looks like a drawing, not a photograph. I am not bashing your comment mesmeraj at all, just trying to understand your point of view. |

"Use high contrast to create impact in your photograph"
I think if you have created the impact inferred to above that is ok, not always just plain ol black and white, surely that was not the aim here?

Mandy, that is high contrast, but your entry is much more interesting and should get higher marks than that photo there. If your score is low now, I would just tell you to hang in there because you know people come back and bump up photos that are over 5 later in the week. Also, keep in mind there is some tough competition in this challenge. I think my entry is smokin, but the scores aren't really reflecting that (yet). LOL

Mandy - your portfolio has some of my favourite HC photos haha.
The do become a lot like an ink drawing when you do them right (i like that about them)
I think this one is a good example
Sure the hair isnt truely black, but there are two prodominent tones white and the just shy of black in the hair, with two or three greys to fill in the details.
whereas your picture of Shelby
would not be high contrast because you have the full tonal range of black and white as you go accross her face.
[just imho]

Mandy - if you're at 4.9 I am amazed. I think your entry is wonderfully done and certainly suits the challenge.
I'm at 6.12 - and another good comment. Hmmmm - maybe mine is more basic and there isn't any question? Who knows. I'm still amazed that I got 1's in my D & L. Those trolls need to go back under the bridge!!

OK, after losing my faith in DPC last night, I'm doing a little better. Maybe I should just learn to chill out a bit. It's not where I wanted it to be, but it isn't my worst either...

I feel so guilty for submitting such a boring shot. Zero comments, it's so uninspiring. And hey, I've got one of the same queued up for the Branch challenge too, Aaak!
I'll have to try to do something special for the Portrait.

Mesmeraj, you in this one? Have you sworn off posting your score so it doesn't get jinxed?
