Sam is a new member to DPC. His questions:

1. if the challenge says "photograph rain" and i submit a photo of an unbrella, is it ok?

2. or "photograph computer" and i submit a photo of a electric plug, is that fine too?

3. "photograph pencil" and i go photograph a piece of wood, how?

If we are to answer "yes" to all 3 of the questions above, which are, technically "Acceptable", i'm just worried that someday, DPC will become like photosig...another "history". Just a RANT, what say you? We need some form of "control". Just as anything else in this world, the rules binds us, whether we like it or not. This is not trying to limit creativity, but to have a boundary of what's ok and what's not.

There is no yes or no answer to these questions. The interpretation of a challenge will ultimately be judged by the voters. There is no need to have a strict rule of what can and cannot be included in a photo.

They're all 'OK', of course. None of them would score well - unless perhaps it was raining on the umbrella.

You know, it all depends...

What if ...

...it's a dripping umbrella entitled "Be Prepared"

...it's the female end of the cord (which attached to the computer) entitled "I Thought Computers Were Binary"

...it's a kid holding a thin piece of wood entitled "Get The Lead IN?"

In general, the more tenuous the relationship to the challenge the lower the average score, but I've always found the comments from the couple of people who "get it" to be worth it.

I'm trying to have fun, so if I can find a humorous, odd, or political take on the challenge I often will. I'd encourage Sam to submit something he's happy with, and not worry too much about the score.

If the score is more important, stick very close to an obvious interpretation, light it well, focus carefully, sharpen judiciously, and border simply or not at all.

That gives me an idea for the "Liquid" challenge (which I'm currently having no good idea whatsoever). I'm going to submit something radically crazy but "related" to the challenge and see the reactions I can gather. And, I'm prepared for a "comment flood" from people who "just dont understand my deep meaning" LOL
