I'm looking for recommendation/guideance re camera/equipment that would be suitable for shooting in gyms. In terms of camera knowledge I'm very much in the novice category.

To provide some context, this would be for tae kwon do where I may be ring side (~4-10 feet from the subject) or within 15-20 feet of the ring most of the time. From experience, judges/competitors tend not to object to flashes being used.

In competition the subject will be either sparring or doing patterns. Hence, I'm looking for something which would allow me to shoot rapid sequences from which I could select pictures.

While I have not set a specific budget I would like to know what my potential options are in the ~1000-1500 cdn$ range for starters. Given that I would only be at 6-8 events a year and have some general purpose canon powershots I don't want to spend a huge amount given a choice.

Cant help you much there... indoor sports are difficult.... a flash is a must, and if you want rapid sequence shooting, you will need a flash that recharges quickly. I dont even know if they make such a critter.... the pros at the volleyball games have several strobes set up around the gym that all fire when they shoot.... sorry cant be more help...

Get a fast prime. Like a 50 1.4, 85 1.2 or 1.8 , 135 2, 200 1.8

Your gonna need a bigger budget to shoot in dark rooms with a decent shutter speed.
