I'm using a maxxum 7d and a sunpak 383 super. The voltage on the flash has been tested from 6 to 10 volts. The camera manual says it can handle up to 400 volts. All this is through the pc sync. The problem is the black bar running down the side of the frame. It was not blocked by anything and the width of the bar changed from shot to shot. I took 17 shots and 9 turned out like this. Any ideas?

I've just noticed that all the shot with the bar have a shutter speed of 250 but one. One has a shutter of 350 and the bar is much bigger. Can the flash and camera be out of sync with each other? Is this just too fast of a shutter speed for the flash sync to handle?

The flash sync is set wrong. It has nothing to do with the voltage. Read the manual on what the camera and the flash should be set at to get the results you are looking for. If this is a non-dedicated unit you will have to set-up everything manually.

The problem you're talking about will be sync speed...

The //www.dpreview.com review of the camera says the sync speed for the 7d is 1/160th.

So if you're using a non-dedicated flash such as the sunpak you'll need to keep the shutter speed below 1/160th.

It also says the camera has a 'high speed sync' mode. So I assume a dedicated (Minolta, or 3rd party designed for the 7D) flash would allow faster shutter speeds.

Are you shooting in the dark, or using it for fill flash? You can still do both with a bit of fiddling/learning.. My first film SLR sync'd at 1/60th and it was still fine for fill and dark use with a 'dumb' flash once you got the hang of it..

Cheers, Chris H.

I was thinking and hoping that was the problem. My panasonic fz20 could just be set at the max shutter if I wanted. I'm new to the slr game and wasn't quite sure if they were set up different or if maybe this was just a camera difference. I have to say I am very relieved that is all it is though. thanks for the speedy input.
