I'm looking to buy a tripod. The one i have became obsolote when i bought my 300D. It's just not strong enough. So. I decided to go with a ball head. I was wondering if tripod heads have some sort of a universal screw.

The old ball head i have has a female screw end, and it's roughly 10mm. Is this a standard size for them? I couldn't find anything on the internet regarding this matter.

There seems to be just two sizes. My Giottos MT8180 has two...

Head Mount Thread Size:
Dual 1/4-20" & 3/8"

I have a Bogen ballhead and I tried it on my Bogen monopod thinking it would work but it doesn't. The ballhead has a 3/8" mount while the ballhead has the 1/4" similar to your camera mount on your 300D.

Hope this helps.

They make threaded adapter inserts. B&H has them.

I have just had this problem having been given a tripod with the head screw missing and have made a new one. The thread is 1/4 inch Whitworth which was a common screw form and size in the UK before the engineering industry converted to metric.

The thread form used on the tripod screw is UNC, not Whitworth. The Whitworth form has a 55° thread angle, while UNC is 60°. Whitworth has a rounded tip and root profile which is hard to manufacture, where UNC is flat. A male Whitworth bolt will probably fit a UNC thread of the same nominal diameter and pitch, but it's far from guaranteed.

There are two "standard" thread sizes used, 14-20 and 3/8-16. The former is the one used on cameras, the latteer is normally used to mount tripod heads to the tripod legs.

I have no doubt that kirbic is technically correct. However, I do not have UNC dies but I do have Whitworth and there is no gainsaying that 1/4 inch Whitworth fits as near perfectly as I could wish without any sign of binding or sloppiness.
