With the bad news that's happened today, I think we should take a look at some great news that's taken place in Burundi...a country that has been in need of good news for the last 12 years and beyond.
Burundi gets post-war government
Behind this post lies a desire for all of us to become more informed about the rest of the world, especialy the 'dark continent'. I know I've been too ignorant for too long.
Embarassed by my ignorance, I've taken on the task of studying every country and it's history and have challenged myself to be able to identify every single country on a globe and to have a bit of an understanding of it's history and culture by the time I start school next May.
I started in Eastern Europe and am now working my way through Africa and then through the Middle East into Asia. Then I will work from Central America down into South America and finish up from there. I also plan on learning some more languages and am learning spanish right now.
A good resource for daily world news is news.bbc.co.uk as it divides up the world into continents and has headline news for each continent.
For my study on different countries I usually start with Wikipedia and then go to more specific sources from there.
Anybody else up for the challenge? Anyone already doing something like this and care to share some resources and tips?

That' a great idea and everyone should try to keep abreast of what is happening in other vcountries and learn a little about the culture. Well done!
However the only real way to understand the people and their culture is to travel, so take every opportunity to travel during your life, not just the tourist places but being with the normal people getting on with their lives.
I learn every time I go to another country (even Scotland!)

I agree...I'm going back to Honduras for a photo story this November as I document the installation of a well for a small community there and I can't wait!
And I hope to do many many more such stories once I finish school and begin my career in photojournalism.

World factbook Is a great source of information and has saved me many times with homework.
I think this is a great thing to do, it's humanitary, it's caring, it's extraordinary by today's standards and definitly inhuman. Are you for real?
About Turkey :P Go read it, then you can teach me what you've learned.

Yes, I should have mentioned the CIA World Factbook as well...very helpful with facts and figures and contains very detailed information for most (if not all) countries. |

Haha, actually I will get to Turkey when I go through the Asian countries so it will be a few months yet! The closest I've gotten to studying Turkey is Bulgaria but I'll get back to you in November or so! |
