See...this site has people NOT WANTING TO ENTER CHALLENGES because there are just too many entries. Why don't they just run like three freaking challenges in a week...two member, and one open???!?!?

But at the same time you don't need to sit down and vote on them all in one go! You have a week to vote! I know it can be a little daunting at times with so many entries. It was mentioned earlier in this post about maybe 3 challenges, one for paying members, one for non paying members and an open challenge for everyone. I think this is a good idea, or would people be put off because of there being too many challenges per week? |

I also am sidelining large challenges, the shoes one is a case in point, i've got one comment tottally useless, as you say a lot of good images get lost in these at the voting for me takes nearly all week .

I've been a member since mid-2002, and I've voted on every image in every challenge with the exception of two (one challenge I managed to miss, thinking I had already voted it; the other I was on a cruise the whole week).
I've cast more than 66,000 votes during my time here. Each and every image is a new learning experience -- the more the merrier. What's the big deal? |

How about run the open challenges every other week instead of every week. You now have quite a following, if the open challenge peoples want more, they cany pony up the $$$ like the rest of us.

Yeah, I like that idea. mean, $25 dollars really is nothing compared to the value of this site. Also, barndog's idea would cause more registered users to join the site. I like that idea. Maybe when the week comes that there is no open challenge, add another member challenge as well, so there are always two challenges going on for the members?

I never understood this complaint. Just because one misses good photos during voting doesn't mean that they are never seen. This is what the results page is for. So, one can either wait a week for the results page or slog their way through all the entries, both of which take time. They are still open for comment after the voting phase. The only thing one misses is the chance to assign a number to it.
Enough people vote so that the great photos make it to the top.
Everybody chill. Yes, this is a competition site, but the stakes are not large enough to warrant all the stress and CAPS LOCK writing. |

This is my first challenge entry and only my second challenge voting. It is daunting - I'm on dialup and have voted on 55 shoes and commented on 47 of them (don't see the point in voting if not going to comment).
The process of getting to the 20% means in this case voting/commenting on 90 images. Each one takes 30secs to load and another 60secs to view, consider, comment and vote. That's perhaps not too bad at 3hrs concentrated effort ... but I don't think 20% is nearly enough!
To make a real contribution, worthy of the effort put into the submissions and for me to learn from them, I'm not satisfied with less than 80% vote and comment. Now that's 12hrs straight - and way too much.
I like the sound of 3 challenges ... an extra one for non-members called "The Newbie Challenge" ? Perhaps then cycle the combined Open Challenge every 2 weeks and the other two weekly.
As a newbie, I'd like the personal challenge of competeing with other newbies as I don't expect my non-member status to last more than a month - I'm having way too much fun. |

Overpopulation??? Sorry, I've missed that one. 250 is not a large challenge, 500 is not a large number of entries -- the more the merrier.
I don't see the value in limiting entries; while it is true with fewer entries it is easier to get your turn in the spotlight -- the spotlight isn't very bright. The larger the challenges, the larger the beacon that glows on those in the winners circle.
DPC is still a small community -- with lots and lots of room to grow. It has lived thru many growing pains, but I feel the most interesting are yet to come. It is currently most like a small child coming to terms with living up to the expectations of others -- but puberty is still a long time to come.

But also if you have a photo that finishes say top 10 in a challenge with a large amount of entries wouldn't it make you feel prouder because you outscored so many others? I know for me it would.

In a way this thread is a site vote, one where people vote with their feet so to speak. Three posters have voted against entering challenges that 250 others have voted to enter. 250 to 3 doesn't sound like a mandate for change.

Yep, that would feel awesome!
...although to be really honest at this point...I'd even be happy if I ribboned in an ultra fast super speed challenge that only had 3 entries!!!
