Hey everyone, I just returned from my personal ground zero. I spent the night last night in Slidell, Louisiana in my home. I went in with my brother, and I'm thrilled to report that my home was unscathed. I took a ton of pics, and I will post them tomorrow... Right now I''m going to bed, though... See you tomorrow...

great to hear!

Hey, I saw my house in Slidell also. It faired pretty well considering. I'll need a new roof and fence, but that's it. I put up 5 tarps on the roof to keep the water out. Two trees fell around my house. Sheew! "Missed it by *this* much!"

Doug's (dswebb) house is ok too.

My other friends went in too. From what we've all seen, some areas are are not as bad as rumored. Downtown Slidell, yes, but the surrounding areas aren't that bad.

I put together some images from various news agencies. These images are from photographers on the ground and in the air.

I glad to see you are ok. The houses can be rebuilt. Great photojournalist pictures.

Amazing thread. I wonder how many DPCers from the hurricane-stricken areas have checked in just to say they're okay. I cannot imagine what you all must be going through, and grigrigirl's posts gave me chills, but if you made it out and are alive and safe, that is everything at the moment.

We have several N.O. families who have actually come up to the Kankakee, IL area to stay with others. This little midwestern town has never been paradise (N.O. was a favorite city of mine) but when it comes to human generosity in my own county, we come through.

I work at a community college and after reading about the plight of the displaced Reginald Darby family in our local paper (whose house was near the levee break) I put out a bulk email to my fellow employees and we raised more than $400 in a short time. I delivered this last evening and got to meet the kids. They've already been enrolled in our school system. The parents were being taken shopping by a church group to purchase necessities, so I was talking to the aunt.

Reginald phoned me later that evening and said how lucky they are and how overwhelmed he is by the outpouring of this community's generosity. As much as I like to complain in gest about my little region of the world, it makes me proud to live in a community where everyone pitches in and helps in times of need. Yes, we will all be contributing to organizations that will deliver the bare essentials to those who so urgently need them as we speak, but to help (even minimally) one particular family whose lives have been turned upside down in a moment of time and who ended up here, well, I'm just so glad for all of us who could reach out and help.

We know what you are going through. The pictures you have posted look just about the same as our town did after Ivan. Have hope. Most people who drive through now probably couldn't tell we had been through one. We can tell. Many landmark trees are gone, but most of the buildings have been repaired or replaced.

As promised, here are the rest of the pics from my trip. Again, there is no post, just resize.. I had to leave my PC behind, so i'm stuck with minimal editing tools... These are mostly of random homes that were damaged by the storm.. I know the owners of a few houses, but not most...

More Katrina

Some of those pics are just utterly stunning. The tree that crumpled that roof - woa. Some of the near misses and near hits. :(

Prayers to all, as always.

Look around the US and see how megalomaniac developers stomped cities out of desert floor that are bound to vanish sometime because you can't get water from just ANYWHERE at a bearable cost, FOREVER.

The site where Las Vegas stands today was, just over a hundred years ago, considered UNINHABITABLE (does this word even exist ? ;-)

LA is built in the desert, survives thanks to water from East of the Sierra Nevada (that's why Mono Lake is so beautiful, but oh so dead, too...).

Phoenix AZ is a deadly sin in terms of "development". Look at the water levels in Lakes Mead and Powell and be surprised (NOT!)

Remember the dustbowl??

It'll come back, with a vengeance...

I live in Honduras - yes, land of Hurricane Mitch. In the past years I watch the forests disappearing at an alarming rate to pirated exotic hardwoods and just basic wood for cooking fuel. I watch the hillsides slide away when the rainy season comes. We are trashing our planet at an alarming rate.

On Katrina, I teach school in Honduras. At least 5 of my students have siblings, a parent, grandparents or aunts and uncles that they cannot locate. Abour 135,000 Hondurans live in the greater metro NO area. These kids are just coming back to school and they are stressed to the max. As poor a country as Honduras is, folks are taking up collections to help the southeast US.

I have found myself in a world of blessings..considering. I decided a few days ago that I have the money to rent an apartment and NOT live like a refugee. The people in the group I traveled with were thinking of going to florida to stay with family. I was on my own and had to figure out my life. My friend and I drove to Houston to check out a nice apartment. I decided it was nice and wanted to lease it. The problem was that the previous tenant still had the key and I could not move in until he returned it. The apartment had been rented by the father of a young guy. The father came in to the office to deliver the key..so I could move in ASAP. When he met us, he told the leasing agent to keep it in his name and let us live there for free...so we can get our lives together and find jobs etc. These people are amazing. He rented another apartment as well..so that the people I am with can have a place to stay. We are all sharing the apartments. We have furniture and food. The neighbors have brought boxes of food and clothing to us. There is an equal amount of good as there is bad in all of this. On an emotional and pscyhological level...we are all pretty messed up. Each day the reality absorbs itself a little further. I feel guilty for not being stronger or feeling happier when I have been given so much. When so many others have not been this lucky and blessed. I havent watched the news in several days. I cant bring myself to look at it anymore. I feel like I cant take another photo or even focus enough to process the bazillion images I have waiting. Im hoping this will pass soon! I appreciate all of the PM's I have received. I havent been able to answer them. I have been getting a ton of email and it is difficult to keep up with it. I want everyone to know that I am reasonably ok...quite lucky and blessed. That there is a lot of good out there. Thank you.

That's pretty amazing, Julia. You're right that you have been very blessed and you absolutely deserve it. I'm sure that you're only able to deal with what's right in front of your face right now, but your perspective and desire to start doing some of the things that you were doing before will come back as soon as you're ready. You already know that, but I just wanted to pass on my best wishes and offer whatever support I can. :-)
