Why do the open challenges always use the basic editing rules and the member challenges use advance editing rules? To me it seems harder to work with the basic editing rules so why wouldn't the rules be reversed for open vs member challenges? Or do they both share the different rules and I'm just not noticing it? Btw, I've only been here for a month.

It is just a way to make you pay. Money = More Editing

Edit: Which you should do anyway. It will be the best $25 you ever spent.

i think it is far more fair this way around.
The open challenges equal out the playground for the advance to the newbies by not allowing much post processing. This means the newbies have a better chance at 1. learns raw photography and 2. placing!
We have some postprocessing divas (and uh, dudes?) on this site, the newbies wouldnt get a shoe in and would soon huff off because all the points would be going to those who are PP gods. Open challenge explores photography skills, members takes it into the digital darkroom (to some extent). If your new to photography, you don't need to be delving into D&B before you can even get your camera to focus...

Also, some contests are more challenging with basic editing, like the 'Breaking New Ground' challenge. Those who are used to Doge&Burn and masking have to find another way around.

Well, it's true that it provides an added incentive to become a member... not that anyone should need added incentive ;-)
The basic editing rules also make the open challneges a more level playing field for those with less practice at advanced editing techniques, at least in theory.
