Did an image the other day that i wanted to upload to the web and then discovered that it had severe banding, to the extent that it spoiled the whole thing. Had used NeatImage for noise reduction and, believe it or not, i managed to do a save-for-web at 100% quality.
Any solutions? |

Without knowing all the steps in postprocessing that you did it is very difficult to tell which one was to blame. However, in general this kind of banding is the result of inappropriate filtering of the image. I suggest you go back to the original and repeat what you did, but apply NeatImage later (after size reduction) or recompute the filter settings for this particular image. Alternatively leave out the NeatImage step. |

I have noticed in the past that neatimage can sometimes produce banding like this. o reduce the effect I turned the noise removal within neatimage to about 60% rather than 100%. This does mean some grain is still left, but leaving some grain is always a good idea so the photo still looks natural.

Hey, Konador, you're right and lifting my spirits. Am still not pleased with how it looks on the web but i need to do some further tweaking. My experience with NI is that it's a time-consuming process. I guess it would have helped if i saved the profile but i didn't :(
Johnmk, i don't believe it's desirable to do NeatImage after size reduction because then you likely WILL end up with that phony, pasty NI look.
Marjo, banding results from compression problems that is particularly visible in large solid areas, such as a solid bright blue sky. It does look like 'bands' of pixels and, believe me, you know it when you see it. |

Thanks, Journey. I didn't know the terminology used to describe it, but I have definitely seen it. Actually, one of todays winners of the "Photo of the Day" on another site I frequent has severe banding. I was surprised that it was chosen. |
