Michael, thanks for the vote of confidence.
I started the morning using the 50mm, then changed up to the kit lens for a couple of shots, then traded up to the 70-300. It was bright enough to be able to get fast shutter speeds. I'm of the opinion the 70-300 isn't as sharp as I want it, but I guess it does the job.
Most of the shots were AF, which meant that I have a lot of captures of the race to the line where the focus is the background. It was a learning experience all around.
All images been UMSed to some degree.
I think your photo is very sharp and you have some good dof going on.
I'll usually do two passes at USM, both small amounts. I do more the first pass (100 1 1) less the second (~40, 1, 1), you may want to try that. There are probably other better methods with USM; if so someone should shout out.
I'd have applied some NeatImage, but I've literally just installed CS2 and have yet to put NI on the box.
