ok...i have had my G2 for about 7 months now and i love it. the only thing that really bothers me is the flexibitliy in BW or sepia mode. it seems that you cannont adjust exposure length or anything when in this mode, does anyone have any hints or tips to get around this or is my creativity suffocated....:-) thanks in advance

Just shoot in AV mode to adjust aperture, TV mode to adjust exposure, or M mode to do both, then convert to b&w later, on the computer.

I've never used the G2 before, but I would imagine the reason why you're not able to change any settings in B&W or Sepia mode is because all the functions are preset to allow the camera to get the Sepia/B&W image to look like a Sepia/B&W image. It is in effect just using built-in software to change the image. All but the most basic settings are kept constant, to allow the camera to reproduce an image as true as possible to what the real thing would have looked like.
You could probably get the same effect yourself, taking a full colour picture, and playing with the colour saturation, brightness and contrast levels. You could also try a program called BWorks which can be downloaded for free (shareware, I think) at //www.mediachance.com/digicam/bworks.htm
I've used this program myself, and it works really well.

With the G3, you can change to manual mode, then set the B&W from the effects menu. However, I know there are some pretty signficant software differences between the G2 and G3, so...
I have my fully manual B&W mode saved as a custom setting, so I can access it with a turn of the dial. Quite handy :)

My understanding of the G1/G2 black and white mode is it is just another automatic mode on the camera like P (program mode). Your manual should have a chart showing what functions/menu options that are available in that mode and any other mode for that matter.
With the G3 they've put BW in the effects menu so full manual control is still available.
From what I've read though it's better to shoot in colour (gather the most info possible) then convert to BW or sepia using software.

If I remember right you cannot adjust the shutter speed in black & white or sepia. But you can over or under expose the image in the camera. While in black & white mode press the button on the back of the camera with the WB. It will be the second button down. I think that̢۪s where you will find the exposure and flash compensation while in black & white and sepia. You move the lines either to plus or minus. You may need to press the button more than once to move through all of the compensations. Hope this helps.
