Maybe I missed the instructions somewhere. What is the recommended size photos to store in your portfolio here?

Are you talking dimensions or filesize? Dimensions must be 640 px or less. File size can be as big as you want, but remember that you have a 25 megabyte maximum.

Well you have 25mb of portfolio space and all images have to be resized to 640 on the longest side but the file size in data can be any thing you wish.

I personally save all of mine at 150kb or less using PS/CS save for web. That would let me put about 167 pictures in my portfolio. I know some even use a lesser size file <100kb to get more pictures in there portfolio.

Hope that helps.

640x640 max dimensions allowed, any file size you want, and most times, images look very clean around 100K, often less.
Challenges pics don't count towards 25MB limit either.

I guess I mean what file size,I always get this stuff confused even though I have been told the difference. i think I got it now. I got in hurry to put photos up, now i will probably have to go back and start over, good thing it wasn't very many, but they were eating my space up pretty quick.

As for selling prints, you need to upload each individual size you want to sell don't you? Does this count against your alotted 25mb ?

If you are using PS you can quickly go through the pics and change the image size to 640 on the longest side and the use Save for Web to optimiize the file size. If you make sure to save as a JPEG in Save for Web the files should be less than 100k. I just posted all the pics in my portfolio and the GIFs came out at 200-240k and the JPEGs at 50-70k.

Another helpful tip.
When uploading numerous images, save some time and steps by adding them all to a zip file, then uploading the zip file.
Uplaoding 10-20 pics one by one is tedious.

Now that is something I have never worked with, a zip file. Don't you have to have a program to do that with? This is a part of my education that was completely left out.

by the way, thanks everybody all this has been a great help.

If you are using Windows XP, it is built in.
If not using XP, you can download most any version of Winzip, but most searches for it will lead to to Winzip's site itself and only the latest & greatest version. Free, older versions are available at OldVersion.com

Create a folder on the desktop for images you want to add to your portfolio, then add them all into it. Open the folder, select all, right click and add to zip. XP's utility or Winzip itself, should create a single file per your naming, with a .zip extension, in that folder (you may need to nudge the destination of where you want it sent).
When you want to upload it, go through your browse & locating process and point it to the zip file and upload.
DPC has a bulit in utility that unzips them and places them in the folder you chose.

for portfolio stuff, i try to squeeze mine down to about 50kb and size them 600-640 for horizontals, and 525-600 for verticals. they seem to come across ok on the web, and sized like this, i can pack in about 475 images.

It is? Sicne when? WinZIP is a standalone program, shareware.
//www.winzip.com/
it has been around since long before windows and got to be so popular becuase it was early, good and free. well, shared, but the software fully works and does not expire.

what brad means is that the ability to compress files into a folder with a .zip extension is built into XP. it has been part of XP since XP was released. if you have XP, you can select a group of files, rt-click, then select Send To | Compressed Folder and it will, voila, create a zip file.

I try to keep my portfolio files in the same size limits as for the challenges, since the dimensions limits are the same anyway, I've never had anything look bad at 150k, so by keeping it down to that I've got lots of space in my portfolio for more shots.

i like to keep 'em real small. between 50 & 75, especially if they are prints. this way I can have more & the inevitability of having to choose which fotos to ditch when I come close to capacity is farther off. :)

Wow, lots of useful information. Many thanks.

You you are uploading one for a print, do you upload the multiple sizes that you want to sell like 5x7, 8x10, or just one file? how does this work?

just one size to your portfolio. I recomment a small res for it. Once you upload a printable version to your pic, you are offered the various sizes you can offer the print in based oin the aspect ratio..
So, in short, no, you dont have to upload different sizes, just one.
