this was just posted in the photography forum at Overclockers.com.au

I went into Canon S Tower today to have a squiz at their gallery, and found they had two 5D's on display, one with the battery grip, one without.

I can try and answer anybody's questions if you'd like to ask them regards to it, I had a chance to sit down with a rep and have a good talk about it. Also scammed a brochure and specials date guide for it.

In any case, here's my initial thoughts, and to try and clear up some information and misconceptions on it.

Firstly, the new AF that it employs. I gave it a go in AI Servo, to see how it went, and got one of the show room ladies to scoot around while I was trying to focus on her. (this was with the 28-105 IS or whatever it is btw) and found that it was not too shabby. I won't bullshit and say that it was brilliant, but in comparison it was a hell of a lot better then what I ever achieved with my 20D.

Viewfinder... It's nice, it doesn't feel cramped, it's nice and bright, and generally good.
And in regards to ISO shown in the view finder. I don't know if it's the same on the 20D, I haven't tested it, but if you press the ISO select button, the ISO appears in the view finder.

The shutter is excellent, no more hard slap of the 20D shutter, but a really nice refined sound, similar to that on the 1Ds MkII. It isn't as loud as the 20D either... I think the general populus will quite like the change if upgraded.

The battery grip is nice, while it doesn't look all that different to the 20D grip, it does feel different, in fact, quite different. Naturally it's solid. I'd be trying to see if they are compatible at all in the future.

I like the weight, it's a little bit more then the 20D, but what's interesting to note however is that the 10D users who were reluctant to upgrade to the 20D, may find sollace in the 5D. It felt really balanced coupled with the 28-105.

If there's any more go for it.

Oh yeah, for those who use Pictbridge, a little LED is now build into the button to activate it. I thought it was cool.

The lens is nice for those who are interested in it. It's light, but not badly built, in fact, it's quality of build is about the same as the 24-70, though a little smaller. USM is quick, but maybe not quite as quick as the 24-70. I personally feel the IS is wasted for general shooting, but may be quite good if used as a lens for parties etc, where sometimes you'll be shooting in the moderate dark.

I'll be heading back there again on the weekend, as I didn't see all I wanted to, and was offered a look at the 1D MkII N if anybody is interested, I'll have a look there too.

And only 6 hot pixels! Better than my silly Rebel, which averages about 10 hot pixels anytime I crank it to ISO 1600 and/or use shutter of 1/50s or slower.
