I'd yet to see a challenge (including the archives) that I didn't like. Even the last challenge of illusions had me stumped, but I think it was generally good. However, this challenge just sucks. I'm not sure of many globally known urban legends and superstitions. I mean, come on, Santa isn't a universal concept, so what are we supposed come up with that we can demonstrate in a single photograph worth viewing that won't be an exclusionary idea. The last time I saw a forum thread on potential challenge topics there were many good suggestions, so why did we get stuck with this one?

I agree that this challenge is not exactly one of the best, but it's surely a way of limiting the entries and making voting quicker!
Photograph a well-known superstition or urban legend. Keep in mind your target audience as you photograph, since this site spans the globe
There are a few ways of approaching this challenge: 1. Try to find a global superstition or urban legend. 2. Use a local superstition or urban legend and just be sure to make an excellent photo knowing that people won't know what it means! 3. Use a superstition or urban legend which most voters will relate to (which probably means western and possibly american).
I admit that this is going to be a difficult challenge - one which I might not enter!
Cheers,
Tim

I think this challenge could suggest halloween.. its an allusion.
If shooting halloween tho you need to go back to it's roots in my opinion and photograph what its *really* about, not just kids at a party or something,

Good point. Most cultures have some way of dealing with the dead - ancestors - ghosts - sperits etc. |

Not an easy one indeed!
Google to the rescue! I'm a big fat zero on this subject so I'll have to educate myself a little bit! I think we might see some pics with our good friends Freddy, Jason, Leather Face.... an easy way out I think. I hope people will be more creative than that. :o)
Keep it up with these themes! I love being stumped and owrking my noggin!! :oP |

Who is Freddy, Jason, Leather Face? See how difficult it is to find something which is understood around the world? ;-) But I like it. And like many other already pointed out: This is a _challenge_. I don't have an idea at the moment either. But we're just at the beginning of the week. Don't give up so soon. You still have plenty of time to think about what to do.

Indeed it is a challenge. It just seems to me that when a challenge is very difficult to meet, people end up putting all their efforts into coming up with something that meets the challenge and they seem to ignore the fact that their resulting photo needs to be a good photo as well. However, a challenge like light source or negative space is pretty easy to fulfil, and the challenge becomes coming up with an idea within that initial restiction that will be an excellent photo, not just meeting the challenge. I think the latter is a much better way to learn and execute great photography. |

i dont think the 'understood around the world' thing should be the eminent consideration.
people might want to consider that the photographer may be showing them soemthing from the photog's own culture. they can be a little bit open to learning something new about a different culture : ) ..
just my feeling ...

I'm stumped! I totally failed in the illusion challenge. I shouldn't have even entered. However, what is kind of irritating me a little is that I see there is 5 entries so far the superstitions and urban legends challenge. I saw the first one go up just an hour after the change over Sunday night. How can people think of what to shoot, get it set up and get it the way they want it in so little time? It makes me wonder if people have a pile of photos on their computer that they draw from when a new challenge comes up. I doubt it because the rules state that it has to be taken this week. I can't believe it!! LOL In the meantime, I have a couple ideas, but still don't know how I'm going to set them up yet. |

I agree. There are a lot of superstitions in the far east that are not superstitions in the US, and visa versa. Since I am heading for Tokyo tomorrow, I'll see what I can do with Japanese superstitions. Probably won't make the cut next week. :-)

The entries that jump in early Monday morning are usually late submissions for the challenge that just started. I think that the description is reminding us to keep in mind that not everyone shares the same legends and superstitions, but I don't think it is saying that we HAVE to find one that is universal. Your score might suffer a little if some ppl just don't get it, but I certainly hope that ppl don't take that to mean that we must mark them down if they are culturally specific. They try to help us out with the description and it ends up backfiring *sigh* |
