this is reposted from long ago, and I feel like it's worth dredging up--though unfortunately I don't know to whom I should attribute authorship.

The natural world - capture something in its most natural environment.
Affection - capture the feeling of affection in your photograph.
Wings â Take your best shot of wings â could be bird wings, angel wings, army wings -
Big things - we've done a micro/macro challenge... now let's see you capture a subject that's huge in size.
Following Eyes â Think of all those great paintings an dportraits where the âeyesâ literally follow you no matter which direction you look at the image.

Sayings and Metaphors â You can make one up or use a commonly known one: "He's as simple as a one-piece jigsaw puzzleâ or âwet behind the earsâ or âOld friends and old wine are best.â âLaugh and the world laughs with you. Cry and you cry alone.â You made your bed, now you must lie in it.
Juxtaposed Shapes - Contrasting shapes can be eye-catching; similar shapes gives a more relaxed feeling. Take a photograph that effectively combines two or more shapes in a balanced image.
Fauna - We've had flora, how about fauna.
Fences - Just like the wheels challenge -take your best shot of fences or a fence.
Panorama - Enter a panoramic image into this challenge. Take into account the special compositional needs of a good panorama.
Serenity Now â Take something that reflects serenity, calmness or peacefulness.
Greeting Card â Member challenge maybe â allow some PhotoShop work â to add text.
Splash of color: In a nearly monotone image, your eye will be drawn to a splash of color, especially red. Without using desaturation in postprocessing, create this eye drawing effect in your photograph.
Dual Center of Interest - A common "rule" of composition is that an image should have a single center of interest. But rules are made to be broken! Take a photograph that has two points that could be considered "centers of interest" yet still maintains a cohesive feeling.
Candid/Street Photography â Take an image that shows a street scene or candid image.
On the Edge : Take a photo where the composition is enhanced by your subject being located near one of the edges/corners of the frame; a variation on "negative space" in that I don't think the rest of the frame has to be "empty."
Compressed Perspective - Take a photo where objects appear to be closer together than they really are.
Flipped-Out - Take a photo in which the final version has been rotated 180 degrees from the original capture. No fair holding your camera upside down while you shoot!
Upon Further Reflection... Take a photo in which your subject is primarily depicted in a reflective surface.
Balance - Take a shot that shows balance in your composition.
Photo Diary - Take a shot that represents a day in your life. (Candidate for a no editing challenge.)

Weekend - What do you do at the weekend? Show us!
Extraordinary - We've had a Mundane challenge. Now shoot something extraordinary!
Tribute - Study the work of a well-known photographer and take an image inspired by his/ her work. The image should not be a copy but should seek to convey your chosen photographer's style, subject matter and/ or techniques.
Peace - Take an image that conveys harmonious relations, reconciliation, inner contentment or serenity.
Shutter Speed - Create an image where your choice of shutter speed leads to the main impact. Choose fast shutter speeds to freeze motion or slow ones to capture motion blur.

Cultural Events or Culture â Take a photo that represents culture â or a cultural interpretation of something, a cultural event is one idea.
Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder - A photo of something usually thought ugly, but using your incredible photographical ability, makes it into a work of art.
Oxymoron - Or any other English terms that have been earlier suggested. Take photos of something that just doesn't work (inflatable dartboard, solar powered flashlight, etc.)
