ok, to sound totally different to the rest..

I hate the use of external drives...
they should not be used as a working drive, only as a backup/stroage medium.
I do a fair bit of data recovery, and 3/4 of them are from external drives, and sometimes 100% recovery is not possible.

Myself..
I store my files on a dedicated photo hdd (250gig seagate), a computer in the other room, and on a 250gig ide (which I usually leave unplugged in the cupboard, I plug it either driectly into PC or into a ripped apart usb2 enclosure.

another consideration is a x-drive.. they work from a 2.5" hdd, I have one of them with a 60gig drive in it, very handy, much better than dragging the notebook around (like I used to) for emptying CF.

all I'm saying is don't rely on 1 copy, ever, the moment you get the chance, copy it onto another physical drive under different power source,

example of something happened to me.
PSU fan in desktop died with no warning whatsoever.. when psu cooked from heat, it took out my motherboard, videocard, soundcard, and 3 of my 6 hdd's, a fourth hdd died within a week later.
its not worth the risk of having one copy for saving a few $$$

I have got to agree with cvt. I had an external harddrive that got fried. I lost all of my pictures and about half of my other data. Fortunately I had a number of my photos backed up on cd. Now I backup to a 300 gig external harddrive, my laptop, desktop, and to DVD.

I am writing a dissertation now so I have become very anal about backing up data.
