We are conditioned (in modern Western societies) to rate things numerically and apply labels to things. We get uncomfortable if we don't know what to call it or how to compare it to a known standard.
It's generally considered that rating higher is a necessary goal; more money, bigger house, faster lens, etc., which leads to most of the economic strife and psychological devastation pervading the world these days.

Personally, I find this sort of information fascinating. |

I agree 'GeneralE' and probably the worst of this labelling and rating is when we do it 'against' each other. There is amazing technical skill demonstrated here but on the assessment side (and it is understandable) it is sadly lacking. My only concern with this is that any person who wishes to enjoy this experience and finds themselves getting 'low' vote numbers might get discouraged and consider themselve without ability.

A wonderful and humourous example of voting is the first place ribbon photo in 'live music', it received three 1 votes, two 2 votes and three 3 votes. Sheesh! Thank goodness these individuals votes did not have greater weight than everyone else!
