Julia, Here's a little more input for you. Keep in mind that I am not qualified to offer advice of the type you are looking for, except that like everyone else I have opinions.
This will probably include some repeats, but some words that describe your work to me would include:
edgy, individualistic, unique, ethereal, quality, sexy, provocative, insightful, thoughtful, beautiful, timeless, unafraid
In a more complete sense, what in my opinion makes your photos especially successful (besides the obvious technical excellence and beautiful lighting) is how well you know and connect with both your subjects and your viewers. You really do, and that's a unique talent.
Although I can't find it now, I recall some discussion here in your thread about it being important to you to be able to stick to your own unique style. I think that you should market yourself as being versatile while at the same time having a very unique style all your own. For people accustomed to spending the really big money, I would guess that they expect to be able to demand exactly what they want, and by being able to deliver that PLUS more you might have more work, especially at the beginning. Like most everyone else here I think your unique style is awesome, but in that particular marketplace you are an unknown. If all goes ideally, then in time your reputation will create demand for the photos that only you can produce, and you will be able to charge an even greater premium for that unique product.
Another idea, and this may already be the norm in the market you are targeting, I dunno. I think that it might be desirable to your clients to have you available for longer than the usual amount of time for a wedding photographer, especially for weddings in unique locations. You seem interested in travel anyway, and I think you could market that desire as an added benefit for those that hire you. Your availability for a week before the wedding to a day or two beyond could create a unique opportunity to provide shots beyond the usual, such as photos of the wedding party being fitted for the formals, or of the arrival of guests, or the parents relaxing the day after, whatever. Just a thought.
Best of luck to you, although all of us here know you don't need it. You're gonna do great. |

yea sorry I had no idea where she was from and after reading "look at her profile" I didn't know what that meant either.
And yes, in lieu of those events I'm sure she absolutely does have more important things on her mind than a 20 word description of her photography. |

I've never met Julia in person, but I exchanged a few emails with her several months ago and along with being a wonderful photographer I found her to be a wonderful person. I think we should keep working on the 20 word description of her photography and whatever else we can think of to help with the dream she had before Katrina hit. I'm sure she is busy now with more important things, but I'm also sure that she will pick up her camera again and that she will want/need to work.
I attended a photojounalistic wedding workshop with instruction from
JVS Weddings if anybody is interested in looking at an example of high end wedding work, this would be one.
In this thread she mentioned needing 20 words for the magazine, some graphic design work, and a web site. I can definitely help with the web site. GeneralIE, did you ever hear anything more about the brochure?

Originally posted by yasemina: rex, i did not find it 'offensive'..I merely thought the comments were careless .. simply considering that she must be more concerned with her children's welfare and a place to live after losing her home right now ..thats why i said to goldberry and muckpond 'read her profile please'
maybe I'm too sensitive..who knows?? |
you did say insensitive though. And sorry if I came off wrong. I just wanted to state the goldberry had no idea.

grigrigirl, I just found my way to your portfolio, and OMG. Girl don't stress about selling yourself, let them sell themselves to you. Just smile, and you are going to be successful no matter what. I added you to my favorite photographer's list yer 1 of only 2 I got there. Incredible! |

Given what little I have gleaned from you posts here, and your work here of course, I would guess that you are more comfortable with a personal approach to marketing rather than a Fuller brush salesman approach. While I am horrilble at marketing my buisness I found Levinson's Guerilla Marketing to be pretty helpfull in getting over my fears of prostituting my firm, and that I could just adjust the way I approched the whole marketing thing in a way that didn't make my bile rise.his web site I hope it helps. I have told the story you posted about getting your new appartment to a few people. Good things can happen to good people. It's nice to have proof from time to time. |
