how do they get access to them and have reviews out on thier website like the day it gets announced???

this is just my own speculation but if i was a cmaera company and i invented a new cam, the first thing i would do is give one toe Steves and one to dpreview. Who here doesnt check those two sites out when looking for a camera?
I take the word od Steves and DPR over just about anything sort of being able to test the cam myself. |

They get near final pre production models well in advance of the announcement date. And later they get the first final production models to write a full review. That's marketing.

it's never REviews on the release date, always just PREviews, except if a new product gets released at a trade show, in which case Phil @ dpreview will do a "hands-on preview" and post a few shots if the camera manufacturer allows it.
He has to remain independent, so sponsoring is out of the question, if he doesn't want to lose his credibility.
He may have a mentoring of some sort set up or the manufacturers pay him for displaying adds, but when you look at dpreview, the advertisement on the pages is always for books, software or by some online photography dealer or price comparison service.
The rest of the links on the front page are strictly site-internal.
THAT is how he stays independent. |
