Is the goal of this site to create 300 challenge entries that ALL look alike? Why do the three ribbons for rain look like they came from the same camera?

the three ribbons def. dont look like the came from the same camera to me...

all three are photos of storms, but look very very different

They all seem quite different to me, other than they are all of storms in some form or another which is bound to happen during a Rain challenge. It seems like you attempted a similar shot yourself. :-)

Because that was the choice of the voters. With 300+ people 'voting' they clearly liked that style of image and thought those three were very well done. With an average score of over 7.0 for all three images they sure liked them. Some other images with the same style did not do quite as well.

Other than the fact that they all depict storms, there is nothing common about these photos.

I hate to say it but they all seem to look the same, especially on the homepage, where they can be compared side by side. They all have a soft pillowy look about them.........

Maybe that's cz it's the effect that suits the best for these images!
They are all under the same "theme", but then, that doesn't make them look alike!
They are all very diff. I can see you haven't been in here for that long, you'll get used to it, take my word for it!

Specifically, they all present darkened, color-shifted images with soft clouds and heavily sharpened details. Fifth place and tenth place have a similar style as well. It's a very popular 'look' at DPC.

Do they all use the same software to prepare or should I say 'finish'?

It is wonderful to have a site where photographers can learn, make friends and participate in 'little' challenges but there is a very clear avoidance to discuss these photographs in a deeper fashion. Why is that?

The standard software for post-processing is Adobe Photoshop, though a number of these effects can also be done (though sometimes less easily) in Paintshop Pro or the Gimp.

What is 'neatimage'?
08/22/2005 08:29:58 PM · #17
I didn't use neatimage. The wind was blowing and with my long shutterspeed caught the swaying grass and made it look blurry. 1st and 2nd place were taken in different states, but we do have similar landscapes. Dry and brown with lots of hills.

only if you don't over process it LOL :)

I use PS CS2 to edit my photos, but this can be done with other programs. Pretty simple actually. Oh and 5th place was taken just right over the mountain from me. :-)) same day even. I wonder what time it was there.

Possibly because your opening message was confrontational and antagonistic (hint: it's widely considered an insult in photographic circles to say that someone's photo is indistinguishable from anyone else's, even if that's what you think), and you didn't ask any deeper questions. I've already answered all of the specific questions you've asked (though I see one more as I'm writing this: Neatimage is one of the better available noise-reduction software packages (its primary competitor being Noise Ninja), and is used to reduce 'grain' in images).

depends what you think overprocessed is... These look close to the line to me at least.

Is that what it is? When pictures are overprocessed they tend to look more alike?

Not always but you're right that it is an extremely popular look here. Maybe a little too popular.
