I was wondering what effect is applied the first three pictures in the rain challenge? Is this 'neatimage' or a lens effect?

Neither. The first is a B&W conversion with heavy burning and dodging, and the second and third are a heavily contrast-adjusted (the first using the USM technique for contrast boosting, rather than Brightness/Contrast, by the comments), color-shifted images, with different color settings, and possibly some burning/dodging as well.
Heavily color-shifted images do well at DPC if the colors are chosen correctly, with some of the artists here (such as Heida) practically specializing in it for consistent ribbons.
Fourth and sixth place used selective desat (the fourth place one was even somewhat subtle about it, which was a pleasant surprise), another technique popular with the voters. Note that you have to go down to 13th place to find an image that you might have been able to see the same way with your own eyes, and that one scored well for having an emotional child.
That's just the way it is here. |

Mine was converted to b/w and then a little dodging and burning, but not much. Oh and used curves to get the contrast just right..no neat image. The wind was blowing about 20 mile an hour making the grass sway.

Nice use of your dynamic range, then; you appear to have pure black on the upper right, and pure white on the left. |

Thanks, the storm was over to the right of me while taking the pictures..I wanted to get the dramatic feel from the edge of the clouds. The sun was shining on the left side of the sky. It was actually quite beautiful outside. I'll have to get a shot of the color to show you guys.

The only real flaw with the 18-55 is its softness and CA at wide aperture, and that goes away by f/8. She shot at f/11. |
