This is it! Take a look at the specs (the few that are there). This camera is exceeding everyone's expectations, and everyone was expecting this to be a $2500 body. At $1699, Nikon is going to take back a LOT of market share from Canon!

Competition is good...As long as Canon has a monopoly on FF sensor cameras they dictate the price...this D200 if for real should give a good whack at Canon to bring down the prices of the 1Ds and 5D's

I'm not sure why the D200 would cause Canon to bring down the price of the 1Ds or 5D since it is still a DX-based (1.5X crop factor) camera...

The ISO is a trade-off. It seems with most sensors you can get higher by losing some on the low end 200-1600. Or lose some of the high end to achieve lower numbers 100-800.

I guess it's personal preference, I'd much rather have 100 than 1600.

Seems a bit low. Most would probably like to see it go up to ISO 1600 or even 3200.

If you look, the D2X has the same ISO equivelency. It can be pushed to high 1 and high 2 which equals 1600 and 3200 respectively. I would imagine the D200 will do the same. Can't wait to get my hands on one.

P.S. Lots of sources are saying that the D200 will have an 8.2 mega-pixel sensor which, to me, makes more sense since Nikon's flagship camera has a beefed-up 12.4 MP sensor. Who really knows though?

Dont expect it to take a lot of market share, the 20d has been out for over a year now, this camera has not even shipped, not to mention officially announced. Also, the Canon 30d is rumored to come out around PMA in february which makes sense with the canon 18 month life cycle.

Here is the real info (according to someone who is supposed to know...hehehe)

Some of you may already have all of the info about the Nikon D200,
scheduled for intro on November 1. 10.5 megapixels, 5.5 frames per
second, APS-C sensor size, price around US $ 1500 .

hrmm...where did you get those specs? 100-800 ISO seems a bit odd...Nikon's been into the whole 200-1600...but then if they're switching to the cmos, that could make sense, I think there was a problem with ccd and 100 for some reason.

It's a shame to see them switch to the cheaper to build, less-efficient CMOS sensor...oh well, you win some you lose some.

IMO the ISO 100 is more useful than the 1600.

This came out of today's dpreview-digest-list:

Tomorrow is likely to be a fairly busy day on the site with some
(expected) news from a very well know manufacturer, keep your eye
on our front page for all the detail.

Phil

another interesting tidbit:

Phil ramble: I honestly can't count the number of times I've seen a manufacturer 'accidentally' place embargoed material on a webserver. It happens before almost every major announcement, this year it has happened with such predictability that you begin to question whether it's just deliberate, designed simply to create hype. Such leaks have occurred in the last 48 hours (twice) and were located by users keen for information who simply used (a) a site based search engine (in the first instance) and (b) changed a single character in a URL (in the second instance). Please manufacturers get a grip on your webserver security, don't upload embargoed material until the minute of announcement and if you must make sure that it is in a password protected area of the site and isn't indexed by your search engine.

Glad I got that of my chest, we're expected to act in uptmost secrecy about any new product, god forbid we ever leak anything like the amount of material I've seen "leaked" by manufacturers this year. (For the record we've never posted even a single character about a product before embargo).

I believe 100-800 is the spec for the D2x also so that makes sense to me.

wow, the iso range is 100-1600 + H1. I'll be very interested in how the new sensor performs regarding high iso noise (for me that's more important than the 100 level). This has everything I've been looking for that my D70 lacks, especially the 5 fps.

Support for legacy AI lenses! Maybe Nikon is listening to photographers after all.

That's pretty much my dream camera. I hope Nikon pumped out a lot of thembecause I might pick one up as soon as I can.

Drool

Drool

Drool, drool, drool!

Ok, before I flood my keyboard I have to be thankful for one thing - I have to make the money from my photography to be able to buy this little beastie - so now I'm gonna kick myself so hard out of this rut that the bruises will still be there when hand the money over

I called B&H and Adorama. Should be on the shelves in about 1-2 weeks.
