I'm trying to get my website sorted out so I can display my photographs properly, and I'm runing into a bit of a dilema. What do you think the most user-friendly way of looking at photography sites is?? I want to display the pictures.. but I don't know whether to group them in catagories with big pictures, thumbnails of everything (seems easiest, but I dont really like the way it looks) a slide-show type thing, open them in a pop up window, etc. I want it to look nice and professional.. not beginner and tacky. Any suggestions of ways of doing it, or any sites that use a really good display method?

i personally like thumbnails along one edge with the full pic opening in a frame next to it, like this: //sd.mysteriousarts.net/FrameSet.htm or this: //www.cr.nps.gov/museum/exhibits/revwar/image_gal/gucoimg/frameshell.html

Next-most I like thumbs that link to the full in a popup. Like these: //www.cr.nps.gov/museum/exhibits/elro/gallery/0galindex.html

then i like thumbs that work normally but you can go next prev from fullsize image to fullsize image. like here: //www.pbase.com/magnetic9999/still_lives

I hope that helps : )

If you aren't afraid of installing and configuring software on a web server, you might want to look at Gallery, it's a album-based image galelry package that does all the work for you, all you have to do is add the pictures once it's set up.

You could also just go with a site that hosts the photos for you, like Yahoo, Ofoto, PBase or one similar.
