I'm on a laptop in New York at the moment, so I'm working slowly on getting my photos sorted out, but I was exiting the subway at 72nd Street, Broadway, and saw loads of NYPD and NYFD driving towards a big chimney of smoke down the road. I followed the crowd down, and being a typical DPC tourist, already had my 300D with 75-300mm lens hanging round my neck. I think I got some good on-the-spot photographs before any of the TV cameras arrived, and I didnt see anyone else with a camera except camera phone. The scene had died down by the time Eyewitness News arrived.
Does anyone know of any New York daily newspapers that might accept my photos via email? I think I have some publishable ones.
Also, I've leaving for Toronto at 6am tomorrow morning so if there are any DPCers in New York City who could buy the newspaper for me and scan it in (or post it) just in case a photo is in there, and so I can find out the story behind the events, that would be great :)

I like the first picture. Here is contact info on the NY Times website, maybe it could help?

Looks like just an "ordinary" truck fire. Otherwise there'd be HAZMAT officers and you wouldn't have gotten ANYWHERE near the scene, not to mention the fact that the faces of the officers would have PANIC written all over them, had this been serious, i.e. even just possibly a bomb...
Believe me, I lived in NYC on and post 9/11/2001.
Happy travels to you, Konador!

Ben,
Welcome to the Big Apple. This might not make the papers. No injuries or deaths, no terrorist story... not really news here. But then again Sundays are slow news days so you never know. |

Great photos. Hope you enjoy your stay and that the papers pick up some of your photos.

ben, all the major newspapers accept emailed images, you need to get in touch with the evening photo editor (there are a few photo editors, just find out who's on)

Konador, I hope you get some of you pictures published. My wife ask me all the time, "why do you take you camera every time you go out", this is the reason why. You never know when, where, or what may happen and you may be the first to witness it. And you don't want to standing there cursing yourself say, "why didn't I bring my camera".
Wish you the best

Hey Konador...didn't anyone ever tell you that the 75-300 is a crappy lens?

Thanks for the comments and tips everyone. I thought whether it was just "ordinary" in NYC but I heard someone walk past saying "You dont see something like this every day" so I figured it was worth a shot. If the TV covered it I thought the papers might too, but it's a long shot for sure :)

There were quite a few injuries. I saw 2 men being taken into an ambulance with breathing equipment on, probably minor smoke inhalation, but one guy got stretchered in with very severe burns by the looks of it, loads of medics around him so couldn't get a clear shot but did get a look.

Well it's good enough for me to win competitions with, and it's good enough to get high quality 20x30 prints out of, so I don't see the problem. Sure, there are other sharper lenses but I'm not made of money.

Hey Ben,
When you're back in Europe, drop me a line. I might have a budget upgrade for the long tele range to offer you... Check my profile. We can talk about the price. I was young and tight on the money once, too and I got it cheap, despite its perfect condition.
Cheers,
Bruno, Switzerland

Someone told me that the 80-200 f/4.5-5.6 mkIII was a crappy lens but it's all I got in that range. Should I quit shooting with it?
Edit to add: Don't wanna be a threadjacker, but I hate it when people say that what ya got to work with ain't good enough. Ya gotta work with what ya got! :-)

Hi TooCool
trust me, your 80-200 beats the crap out of any of the 75-300 versions...
Of course it's not as good as the 70-200 f/4.0 L, but it cost lest, too, right?
You get what you pay for and I admire your attitude - I share it ;-)
