A friend of mine in NYC has a sister looking to buy a decent P&S calera to the following specs:
" I'm looking for like 5 mega pixels, about 2 seconds between shots, a black & white, sepia setting, some kind of zoom, compact, and I'm looking to spend $250 or under, if possible. "
Any suggestions?

From my experience, any of the Canon Powershot line should be ok. I know the A95 is quite a nice camera, and it runs on AA batteries. You may have to look to find it at $250, but it is close.

I just got the Panasonic FZ5, it's a little more than $250 but I'm very happy with it. 12X zoom, Image Stabilization, B&W and sepia modes, and very easy to use. Not exactly compact but not huge either. Check out my portfolio under "new stuff" for some examples. It doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles but it serves my purposes. Nice macro too. |

She wants a "flat" camera to carry around in a purse/pocket. She's NOT a "photographer", she'll be doing almost entirely straight-from-the-camera shots.

Does she really need 5MP? The Canon SD200 is tiny, very quick startup and between shots, great zoom for the size (3x optical, 3.2x digital), and can be found for around $200. My mom carries one in her purse, and I carry one in my pocket when I don't want to bring my 300D. Only thing I don't like about it is the lack of battery level indication until it's almost dead -- the battery life is good though. 3MP is enough for most uses. The SD300 (4MP) and SD400 (5MP) are basically the same but with a higher price.

I really like my HP Photosmart R707. It is compact and has all the features she is looking for. It has a rechargeable lithium ion battery so you are not constantly having to replace batteries. It also allows you to take MPEGs. It also allows for some manual control over settings if you want or is completely automatic. Worth looking into, IMHO. |

I was going to suggest the Canon A-series also, and you might also look at the Olympus Stylus series -- they have a water-resistant housing which lets you use it in poor weather. |
