so i just spent like twenty minutes going through joey lawrence's portfolio. then i went through and looked at the people who were commenting on his shots. a lot of these photographers are < 18 years old.
im pushing the limits of 23 now and i know it seems sort of presumptuous for me to judge my own limits, but with talent like theirs at such a young age it seems like i'd need to devote a major portion of my time in order to match their skill. (a hefty compliment to you joey). so..... lay down on my psueo-suede couch and analyze my thoughts. ... that seems backwards... but you get the idea.
----edit----
btw, how many other ppl look at the talent of these, in all honesty kids, and feel a bit behind in the game?

Man, who DOESN'T feel behind the game with Joey and Annah around? I think they should be illegal. :-) I just keep telling myself they are really old fat guys from Antartica. Hehe.

You probably will have to devote a good deal of time. You can bet they do. So you have a digital camera. That's not the end of it by a long shot. Just like in anything, if you want to get ahead you have to first pay your dues. In the words of old Jack Burton "Have you paid your dues?"

This only matters if you take pictures with the goal of comparing them to others.
I thought comparing yourself to others (in the sense of good or bad) was sort of the opposite of what art was about.
I am sure that guys like Joey would say the same thing. He puts his work out there because it is good and he would likely have the hope that it would ENCOURAGE others to do more.
You can never know how good you will become until you become as good as you can be.
Einstein sucked at math. Beethoven was deaf.
They could have thought the same thing.
Is anyone better than Einstein? Math can be right or wrong. Doesn't mean his accomplishments are any less.
Is anyone better than Beethoven? All depends on what the listener likes.
Form can be right or wrong, but it can be learned. Art can't be right or wrong. How much less should we judge our own or anyone else's efforts as bad.
Bikers say Keep Riding! Musicians say Keep Playing! Photographers say Keep Shooting!
Don't stop the music. |

i feel totally behind - not so much by thier age, but how fast they ("kids") make progress.
I'm 22, and a couple of the girls half my age that i took for digital development are going to be on par with me in a year or two if they keep up with photographery (you can check out thier pics in my portfolio) |

I know how you feel - some of the younger kids here are very talented. I'm going on 44 and just got into photography 2-3 yrs ago. I didn't learn PS until recently, and am still learning it. Many of the photogs here can be intimidating, but you can't let them stop you. They should inspire you.

You're never too old to start if the passion burns |

I have fun trying to be as good as Joey and the others, and I enjoy looking at their photos.
If you try to compare yourself to others you'll always be dissapointed because there is always someone better.
Besides, I bet Joey looks at us older farts and wishes he could be like us and buy beer or go to R rated movies...

ditto.
I don't think you can ever be too old or too young to start something, as long as you have passion for it :-)

You'll have to fight me for it, and I can get mighty vicious! ;-)
No, really, that ribbon was extremely lucky...I mean, who gets a blue ribbon with a score like 6.4?

I'll go against the grain in this 'old' thread and tell you that you are too young to be putting your ability down like that. Not to mention a waste of time doing it yourself -- there are so many out there with years of experience at putting people down that will do it for free.

At their age I had talent too!
Then life got in the way. As you age and see things, your imagination seizes up, your vision gets stagnant, you lose the freshness of youth.
If you have been excersizing it for 20 years you might be OK. A lot of it is their youth - the world is new to them. Some is their lifestyle - mine is tied up in home repairs, car repairs, work, kids, marriage...I have very little time for 'dreaming' , creativity or even sleep.
Responsibility killed the youth in me.

the people 10 years older than me can say the same to me, but Hell, 23 is young. Endless possibility.
i'm far more talented now than i was then. And i still can be anything i want when i grow up.

I think one should just do what brings one pleasure and not torture oneself with pointless success charts. There's always going to be someone ahead of you in some aspect. It doesn't matter. They live their lives, you live yours, just try to make the best of your own life.
Besides ... I imagine it can get pretty lonely up on Everest with nowhere higher to go.
I personally know with absolute certainty that I'm never going to get any ribbons on any challenge here. Simply because the pictures I like to take are not the kind that get awarded on DPC. Do I feel bad about it? Not the least bit. I'll go on taking pictures that I like. If someone else likes them, very nice. If not, no problem for me, I'm still gonna go on taking them.
I don't know if I have any talent for photography and it doesn't matter much anyway. The most important thing, in my opinion, is to remain completely honest to yourself, not to trade in your soul just to please someone else. And to take photos that have a meaning and a story, first of all to you as the author, and then, maybe, for others. If you can do that, I think you can be a happy photographer.

how should I feel... I started at 49 ;-). Yip, I admire these youngsters, but I had my time. Now is their turn. Let them work at it while I can sit back and just enjoy being me. And enjoy watching them. |

Now you know what it's like for us software developers when we read a 9 year old girl qualifies as Microsoft Certified Professional.

I think you'll find you're definately not too old.
I keep reading stories about people who picked up a camera for the first time in their thirties and gave up their day job two years later to become full time photographers. |

If you're too young to die, you can't be too old to pick up photography.
