My 50mm f1.8 started making a racket when I focus it. It still works, but it sounds like the teeth of the gears are slipping. When I switch to MF and turn the ring, it does not make the noise. I don't see any way to attempt to diagnose or fix the problem myself. Do you think taking it in for repair would cost as much as the lens itself?
I'm not aware of any trauma to it, but of course things happen around here without my knowledge...

Probably just something loose. Smack it on the side of the counter a few times and maybe it will fall back into place.
Use the lens as long as it will work and if it is out of warranty, just buy another. A idea might be to start saving a little and when it finally does go upgrade to a 50mm 1.4. The build quality is much better.

that's the "Oh Chit" sound - might be the AF motor is about to go. |
