What are the different organizations that one could join? Ex. WIPP for wedding and portrait photographers.

Anyone here belong to an organization/association? What do you think of it/them? What perks are there? Cost? Anything else that may be helpful to know?

Thanks in advance!

There's Wedding and Portrait Photographers International (WPPI) and Professional Photographers of America (PPA) which also happens to be incorporated but I guess they just didn't want that other vowel :P

I belong to both of those. The each afford camera and/or business insurance through 3rd parties (WPPI uses Hill & Usher and PPA uses Marsh Affinity Group Service from Seabury & Smith). They both provide some help with equipment leasing, credit apps, some marketing venues and some of the benefits a professional studio might choose to offer to employees. Having professional membership also implies (but does not guarantee) a certain level of service and professionalism.

There are many other things you can get through your membership but at least you have some links to these two agencies.

Hi Kevin. Thank you for the info and the links. I will definitely check them out. It's not that I 'need' to join an organization but thought it may open another door for learning and support.

Thank you again!

There's also ASMP, American Society of Media Photographers.

You might also check out any local camera clubs. I belonged to a local one in Cincinnati. I didn't get down there often enough, so I just quit..but it was very nice.

They had two full studios available for members to use, as well as a finishing area with mat cutter, etc. and a full computer center with PS, scanner, printer etc. The met every Thurs. with different formats for each week (a print competition, a studio night w/ hired model, speakers and more, PS tutorials and more.)

I fully plan to rejoin when my schedule allows me to make better use of it. Price for our club is $195 a year.

Thanks, Dan!

Judy, thank you. I actually belong to two local camera clubs. They are the only two that I know of at this time. Being out in the country doesn't give me much to choose from and we certainly don't have a whole studio to use. ;-) I sure wish we did! I really enjoy my clubs though.
