Was out shooting this morning to get sunrise photos. It has been nearly 3 months since I have managed to shoot a Heron at close range that actually caught a fish.......
I left the camera on 1600 ISO, from the night before...

Here is crop from the raw afterwards. It was RAW at least. Sniff. |

Really nice! ISO 1600 is very good when you have a lot of light, and noise ninja can save any shot even with low light.
ps: What focal length?

Not a bad shot at all! What lens were you using? |

Really nice shot. I don't see the ISO 1600 hurting it much, at least at this resolution. I suppose it might be limited in maximum print size, but we mostly look at big prints from further away, so...
Good job!

It's in situations like this that I wish I had a 600mm lens.... |

I would be thrilled with such a shot. |

That's an awesome shot. I hope you don't mind that I played with it a little. I'm envious because I don't have any such great images of my own to play with.
The only other thing that would make me like it even better was if the top were not cropped quite so tightly.
Great work!

wow... I really like the shot and I really really like the shot after Roxanne's adjustments... a lot more pop to it and the perspective shift seems more natural

Very nice greatandsmall.
Thanks all. Any tips to get more from these images would really be appreciated. I tried Seppaku, but the letter opener is to dull.
It was shot with a 70-200mm F4L @ 200 mm.
I have spent nearly 400 hours following Herons and have 2,000+ photos of them, probably the same number for eagles and sea gulls.
Last time I was shooting Herons, when they caught a fish, I backed off my position so people could get in to take their photos. Of course it caught the fish as I was moving. Will not do that again. |

Where do you find all the herons (location)? |

Nice finishing job, Roxanne. I was gonna wade in and do that, but you beat me to it. Reversing the image works very well also. Funny, ain't it? I wonder, though; to our Japanese members, does it look better in the original orientation?

Thanks Robert,
I was kind of hoping that someone with more experience would take another shot at it. I'm getting ready to start shooting RAW and would like to learn more myself.
I always wonder that about the Asians too. (Good puns BTW;)

Nice picture. I took this one last night.
I wish I would have got more of the reflection and I did quick editing this morning and didn't notice it is a little slanted.

Since we're all admiring birds...
This is recent as of the last month. I have so many photos to go through, but I liked this one. |

Nice photos of Herons.
Here is another from this morning, not sure how to make a contrast mask.

OOOHHH, I really like that one. It pops!
Here's a Contrast Masking Tutorial. You will probably have to play around with the opacity. 100% seems pretty strong on most images.
