Thanks for all the comments on my time-capsule entry. A few people wanted to know how the image was done so here it is -
- I set up my camera on a tripod pointed downwards towards the ground.
- Then I prefocussed a few centimeters off the ground and switched to manual focus
- I switched to manual exposure with a shutter speed of 25 seconds and aperature of f/14
- Then i got all the stuff i was going to use together which included text, photos, a national geographic article, and a flashlight
- Then i mentally decided how I wanted to place each object in my 'collage' and arranged them in an order where i could switch each object quickly and efficiently.
- I used the remote to start the long exposure
- And with the flash light i went over each part of what i wanted to be in my collage including my hand turning a page (that was tricky)
- I repeated this process 3 or 4 times bcos i had problems with glare from the flashlight on a glossy finish which one of my elements had.
- The image really had a dark feel to it which was what i was going for
- In photoshop i adjusted the curves and applied a usm
And thats how I did my collage entry to the time-capsule challenge. It is dedicated to peace, and all the people who have been affected by the Chechen War especially the children killed in Beslan.

Nice shot.... I actually gave this one an 8, only because I thought the white exposure on the side of the kids face was a bit much.
I'm just glad I beat you for once! :p |

Not entirely convinced about the ethics of using existing photos in this way for a photo challenge, but I can't deny the result is fantastic.
Love your portfolio BTW, added you to my favourites. |

Thanks, as a side note the shot was validated by SC. For me it is the equivalent of a collage in traditional art where you take existing elements such as cutouts, real objects, magazine and newspaper clippings and make a new composition from them. I would never dream of doing copyrighted work with this image, but i think was a very good exercise in in-camera layering effects to convey depth.
