Visit to dentist for further work (4 hour's worth) = sleepless night. So I was awake at dawn. Blah dawn, no clouds, a breeze so no reflections, but nice warm light down at the beach. Had some fun getting up close & personal with the 10mm lens and the 60mm macro. Whatta difference, LOL. Used both lenses at the same working distance, basically.

That 10mm lens is one HELL of an interesting nature close-up lens. I'm just getting an inkling of what it can do.

Yup. that's the most interesting one, to me. I hadn't realized just how CLOSE that thing focuses and how much DOF it has even close in, if you stop it down a little. My mind is spinning with possibilities. I need a right-angle viewfinder attachment, though, if I'm gonna take full advantage.

Nice shots, Rob. My favourite is definitely the first. Yep, the 10-22mm is a fantastic lens. :-D

Sweet patooties, the dof on that first one is mind-boggling. What was your aperture? I'm assuming it was the Canon 10-22, right?

Yup, Canon 10-22mm, f/11, AUTOFOCUS! Held this thing at ground level, couldn't even look through viewfinder... I guess I should put the image data in the fields, eh?

hrmm...I don't see what's so amazing about the DOF in the first one though...seems the grass in the foreground is out of focus, as is the grass in the background...looks like you have what...a whopping 2 feet of acceptable sharpness?

Yeah but the grass in the foreground is like 4 inches from the lens and the BG is like 30 feet away. YOU try it and see what you come up with, LOL. It's pretty stunning...

I dunno...but assuming you focused 1.5 feet infront of the lens, at F/11 -- your depth of field at 11mm is like 2 feet...and assuming it focused 1.5 feet infront of the lens is being generous -- as that decreases, your DOF decreases.

I mean it's a cool shot, but I wouldn't say it's the best representation of such an amazing depth of field...that's all.

DOF is relative, it's a visual perception. Regardless of how far you stop down, there's only ONE plane that's truly in focus. The visual DOF of a 10mm lens is astaonishing. It's the same thing that people complain about in the inverse; with prosumer cams, they can't get a NARROW enough DOF, in other words.

Look at it this way: if I WANTED to take a shallow DOF shot at 10mm, I'd have a really hard time doing it.

The difference here is that 10mm is MUCH wider on the 20D than it would be on, say, the Coolpix 5700. It's just astonishin g, is what it is. Wide and deep. Enjoy it.
