I finally got a little extra money ( have been out of work since boss filed bankruptcy) and signed up for my membership here August 12th and Paypal is estimating that my transaction will clear on August 17th. My bank is faster than that, and the transaction cleared my bank on the 15th. Still, My Paypal account is showing it as uncleared, therefore I am going into my 5th day of waiting to become a member. This is not the first encounter I have had with the almighty paypal causing me to put my little life on hold. Just thought I would let you know that if I had got to pay with out paypal through my Visa, it would have been a done deal and I would be a happy member by now. |

I had that problem that paypal wouldn't take M/C so I sent cash only took less than a week.

Why didn't you use your Credit Card through paypal? Echecks take a lot longer. Visa payments through paypal are almost instant from what I remember. |

Fastest way to sign up. If you don't have a CC you can give the money to someone and they can give a gift membership to you with their card.

Wasn't some members giving gift memberships away? |

I used my Visa like I do for everything, they put it through like an Echeck , whatever that is. I was already a verified user at Paypal meaning they had already verified that I had a good standing account and that my email was correct and all, should have been a breeze. |

The only reason I'm not a member yet, is that when I wanted to sign up, I got so pissed about paypal that I quit the process.
First they let me sign up, enter all my data upo to credit card information. Then they say, ok, if you want to pay someone else, you've got to pay US first. Why, I ask.
Second, after I completed the registration (or so I thought) and even agreed to pay paypal before anything else, it appeared that I still couldn't make a payment. Why? Well, apparently they need to take me through three layers of security clearance and background check. Why? I guess because I live in an obscure place Estonia. They probably thought I had invented the name of the country. So they ask me to fax them a utility bill, so the would know I really exist. It's just not good enough that major Scandinavian banks are satisfied enough about my existence to issue me credit cards, not worrying that they would be unable to locate me when it's time to pay the bills. Anyway, even if I had any utility bills to fax, I wouldn't, because I find this request an insult. Secondly, I don't have them, because, first of all, I have delegated all this stuff to my wife and it's her name on all those bills. Besides, we don't have any bills printed on paper anyhow. Utilities send the bills electronically to our bank, where we can approve them for payment on-screen on the internet and that's it. We live in the XXI century, ya'know.
I mean, if my identity, my cards and my money are good enough for amazon.com or emusic.com or easyjet.com or for any number of other vendors, what's so special about paypal, that I must be tightly scrutinized?
So, to sum up, I'll become a paying member, when I can pay with my card directly to dpchallenge.com. No sooner, no later.
/sorry, folks, just had to let out some steam/

First I want to say it is Aug.17th and I am still not a member because of Paypal even though this was the estimated date to be clear.( I will address them, I know it's not DPC's fault) Second, Paypal usually verifies you by email unless there is another problem, then they ask for the utility bill to verify physical address, but in your case they were probably just too stupid to believe that there is a place they've never heard of. We also had to send a utility bill once because paypal uses your address like an account number. Therefore when 3 adults living in the same house who have 3 different jobs, 3 different emails and 3 different bank account numbers sign up for paypal to purchase from ebay, Paypal links all the accounts together by address. So when one member lost his Visa card and had to cancel it, causing a couple of people not to get paid immediately, Paypal put a hold on all three accounts for two weeks til we could sort it all out and send them more info than the CIA requires. Thank God the person who messed up didn't move out and leave us with this confusion or we could have never cleared it up. Wonder how many potential customers DPC has actally lost because of them--Hmmmmmmm? |

Perhaps you pushed the wrong payment option button. An Echeck is a debit from your bank account. Most times mine clear instantly, but some transactions take a few days. I'm paying out $7,300 through Paypal this evening and I expect they will wait for the transaction to clear before they will pay out to the vendor.

Once you use paypal long enough they know if you are good for it. I have used paypal for a lot of stuff. Now using my bank account is instant. |

That sucks that you're having so much trouble.
I've actually had nothing but good luck with them and I use paypal on a regular basis. I use both my checking account and Visa (same card, Debit) so that I'm covered for sellers on ebay who only take paypal, or only paypal using a credit card. Not only does everything get paid nearly instantly but they've also gotten money back for me from ebay sellers who flaked on me. Hopefully yours will get all set up soon and in working order!
Good Luck!

PayPal has become so prevalent on the web that they are starting to show all the characteristics of an unregulated monopoly. I was very disappointed recently when two stock sites I was investigating had PayPal as their only method for photographers to receive payment. I e-mailed one of them to ask about alternate methods and got no answer.
The amount they charge is high and the service they give is at the level of the least they can get by with and not be called thieves. And heaven forebid you ever have a screwed up transaction and need help from their nearly non-existent customer service. Anybody got any idea about how they compile and sell all the info they gather about individuals and their finances? My advice is to use any other method of payment if possible. If not possible, find another place to do business.

I am also not a member because of PayPal. Go through subscription process, but when it gets to country it doesn't have South Africa on the list. And I know of other people on other sites with the same problem. So I will NOT becoming a member here for the time being... |

If you're interested in becoming a member and can't/don't want to use Paypal, try getting in touch with D&L. They've set up alternative payment methods for a number of other members. |

I and the other members of my household have been using Paypal for approx. 3 years and we all use our Debit Cards, most of the time it has been instant transactions, but it wasn't this time, that is why I am wondering what the heck they were doing. Last time they put the brakes on a very important transaction causing such a hassle you would not believe. I won't go into details and take up this thread, if anyone wants to know , PM me. I will say that sometimes it is as much of a hassle to not want to use them as to give in and use them, I don't like the feeling.
By the way, I am officially a member today finally. Yippppppeeeee!!
I do hope everyone here has heard of the email scam where someone is using Paypal's logo and making themselves look like Paypal to trick people into giving up there account information to them by replying to the email. There are other company's that are having the same problem. Paypal should focus on this problem, it could be one of their employees with access to Paypal member email addresses, how else would they know who to target? My son runs a small business using the internet and Paypal so lots of money gets exchanged almost dailey, he received one of the bogus emails demanding that he update his account or be messed up, he ignored it and nothing happened, the other members of my household don't use Paypal too often, so alot of money isn't consistently exchanged in their accounts, they did not receive the bogus email. Makes you wonder.

This has been going on in one form or another since Paypal was formed. Since eBay was formed. Your email address is fairly easy to find for anyone who wants to find it. I'd tell your son to check for spyware.
Hell, I get a bogus email from Citi Bank almost once a week and I have never even done business with them.

Congrats on being a member, pixieland!
I went to buy a gift membership for someone last week and my wife has a balance in the PayPal account - she uses it, I generally don't - so I thought I would use my checking account for funding the transaction - eeeehhhhhttttt (buzzer sound) - bad idea. Wouldn't clear for four days or more. So I turned around and bought another one using some of the balance. I was going to request a refund/return, but my membership is up in October, so I just renewed mine when the "electronic check" transaction cleared a week later! So, yes, I signed on for another year... (hears the sound of many groans)
Side note about the PayPal or any "official" bank emails - they are almost always sent in HTML format and will have a URL like https://www.paypal.com/secure/dont_worry/justenteryoursecretinfo.asp?nothingsuspicioushere
But you can right-click in the body of the email, select View Source and look at the underlying HTML link tag and it reveals:
or something to that effect. This pisses me off so much because so many innocent people follow the links and enter their login info into this fake website. I have traced the actual linked sites to their hosts and lodged complaints an threats against them as well as reporting them to PayPal. I don't hear a whole lot of these people getting caught though. |

This technique of sending out fake emails is called phishing and is quite common. NO bank or online service will ever send you an email requiring you to respond to a link. If you get such phishy emails, please forward them as sppropriate to:
spam@uce.gov (US Gov't -- I think the FTC)
spoof@paypal.com
spoof@ebay.com
spoof@citicorp.com (CitiBank)
spoof@wamu.com (Washngton Mutual)

This is not true. I signed up using Paypal. It has only been available in the last two months or so.
Use your credit card and they effectively act as a proxy. I don't think that you can open a bank style account with them yet; this would allow payments from, e.g. DPC Prints, to be payed into your account. Look here: PayPal Availability
All very strange when you considor that SA has one of the most sophisticated banking environments in the world ... linked to a terrible foreign exchange environment.
Cheers

I had nothing but problems with my paypal. I live in a different country than my home base and they basically sent me through three shades of accusing me of fraud and in the end would simply not allow the transaction to go through in spite of having provided ALL the information in three separate passes that they required for identity verification. Their accounting reporting on the website is ATROCIOUS. I actually did take a course in accounting, so I don't consider myself a complete lame-ass when it comes to things like that, but I couldn't follow the loops they sent my VISA card and Bank account through in multiple loop-backs and currency exchanges.
I've completely had it with them. On top of that, they were rude to me when I took the time to call them long distance from Taiwan to ohio or wherever they are. This was only after they refused to make any reply to my 5 internal Paypal requests for help over a month-long period.
Satisfaction with paypal = 0%

I guess everyone will like and dislike the same things. I had been using paypal for 6 years (since they first started), and I have never had a problem. I put money in my account, and use my debit card for purchases that I get 1% back on (helps when school clothes shopping!), I use it for buying and selling, and all my transactions have gone smoothly! The only thing I dislike, is that international users can do a chargeback, and you're helpless to stop them. I lost about $20 that way, so I don't accept paypal from international users.
I really like it, but I s'pose if you have had nothing but problems, I can understand why you wouldn't. |

Update! Update! Anyone folowing this thread knows that my complaint is with Paypal and not DPC for not processing my payment to become a member in a timely manner. I wrote Paypal a n email a few days ago to ask what was taking them so long. I finally got it all cleared about mid day of Aug. 17th.
I just received a generic email from Paypal (Aug.21)telling me how I can go about filing a compalint against the seller (in this case DPC) and how to ask for my money back.I specifically told them that I was complaining about "Paypal" and gave them examples of problems experienced there. So typical of their service. I will only use them if there is no other way in the future but I am afraid that if they keep going they will make sure that we are all forced to use their servcies if we want to make net transactions. |
