This lense was selected the EISA Lens of the year, which is pretty high recommendation. I own this lense and the more I use it the more I like it. Initially, I was discouraged by the fact that it is a slow lense, only f6.3 at the long end of the zoom. But, with digital SLR it is simple to compensate for that by adjusting the ISO. I now recommend this lense for those who are going traveling or into a situation where you want to carry only one lense, it will be difficult to change lenses, or you will need to change your angle of view rapidly for a variety of perspectives.

The effective range on my Canon Rebel XT is 29mm-320mm, which is pretty nice. And for around $350, it can't be beat. Also, it has metal mounts and is well constructed. And the 62mm barrel helps keep the cost of filters on the lower end.

I see that it won the award for best "European Lens", what good will that do me here in the US?

And how can a lens made in Asia be the best European lens anyway?

I just purchased the Tamron AF 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di II for Canon and so far I am very pleased with the lens. It is a 35mm equivalent of 28-300mm. It's no L lens but don't carry a "L" price tag either. I was considering the sigma but was told to go with the Tamron buy my local store even though they had the sigma in stock and would have to order the Tamron. I also was told to go with the Tamron over the sigma by B&H representative. Not saying its better than the sigma but I am definitely pleased with it so far.

It has a nice macro of 17.7" or 0.45m @ 1:3.7
