Let me speak here as a man who has acted like your man. I was single at the time, but had many good friends who I ignored to stay on chat lines and such for many hours at a time. My friends came to me and talked to me, as you did to your man, and while I heard what they said, I simply went back to the chat lines.
The only thing I can tell you about my actions - and I tell you only because it may give you a small insight you seem to want - is that I was searching for something in the way of friendship and companionship that I was not getting in the real world. It's not that my friends were bad or anything, I just seemed to need something that would fill a need that was not being met.
Eventually, I drifted away from the net as a place of emotional sustenance because it too did not give me what I wanted. The problem was - and this will sound too trite, but I think it is true - what I wanted was only available from me and not the outside world.
