I've seen the tutorial "Selective Desaturation Within the Basic Editing Rules" and I'm wondering if there's also a post somewhere explaining additonal detail as to how this is done with advanced editing.

I'm sure there are, but basically the idea is that in Advanced you can mask-off areas where you want to remove or preserve color, so the result is not so dependent on the color range of the original. For example, if you have a photo of two kids, one with a yellow hat and one holding a banana, with the Basic technique you could only keep both yellow or desaturate both; under Advanced Rules you could mask off one and change the color of the other only. |

You might find this lengthy but informative review of selection tools helpful: stdavidson's tutorial
When I "mess" with colors I create a new hue/saturation layer for each color I need to tweak (I only have PS Elements). I re-name them "reds," "cyans," etc. as I go. That way I can adjust opacity or go back and change what I've done easily.

I simply desaturate the image and then use a history brush to paint back the sections i want in color.

If you have Elements, you don't have a history brush.
The work-around is to create a duplicate layer of the original, fully desaturate that, then erase the parts of the duplicate layer where you want the colored layer to show through. You can set your brush's opacity to vary the effect.

Thanks for this most excellent information. I had a quick look at the tutorial and it seems to be just what I'm loong for. I'll take a better look at it tonight.
Thanks again!
