I've been around here about a month now and have seen several questions come up on just how much editing is allowed. I've seen images DQed for doing too much editing. I think the rules are clear between the basic and advanced editing challenges.

Questions come up on how much can someone crop an image, questions come up on how much cloning can be done to clean up an image. questions come up on how much some element can be moved within an image.

All of these are somewhat subjective decisions. What might help is a page linked from the rules showing examples of what has and what has not been allowed. What we see now is the image after it is DQed with only a general idea given as to what has changed. What I would suggest is that a series of before and after images be posted on this page (or linked from the page) that show the before and after images.

This would show how the rules are actually implemented. This is always helpful when the decisions are by there nature a mater of judgement.

we've discussed this quite a bit. we've only recently started showing the dq'd photos after a challenge.

the problem with before-and-after is that it's totally at the photographer's discretion whether or not they want to post their original. while the SC receives and reviews originals for validation, those images are not released to the public. often, though, the photog will post the original in a forum thread.

lots of people don't like to show how crummy their pictures were before they were posted, and there's just not a lot that we can do about that. :)

for the record, no one gets dq'd for too much cropping -- unless they've cropped much of the picture and replaced it with a gigantic border that dominates the image (thus creating a "major element").

I'm sure this has been discussed but is Gothic Glow legal?

Tnx muckpond

I got here after the decison to post the DQ images and think that is a great start. I think taking it a step further would be useful.

I would leave posting the before image at the photographers discretion. I would think that there should be enough of the members who would be willing to let their images be used that the idea could work. And you are right, some do post the before and after in the discussion threads - but it is not too long before those postings are lost to most users. Those posters may be the group most willing to let their image be used for my idea.

For those who don't want to show how bad their originals were I would answer that this is a learning site and as such showing that would be a great way to educate and to show just how much an image can be improved. I would not put that kind of thing in with the DQ stuff though - that is not where it would be most useful.

Tnx for the info on crops - that would have been my standard - but at least one person asked the question, so I included it in the example. It shows me the level of confusion out there on the issue and helps to demonstrate the need to clarify some of the rules. I just think actual examples go a long way to explaining how the process works.
