Finally got to play with this today, and it's so much fun! I'm a wideangle fan already and I can see this easliy becoming my favorite lenses. For reference, in the picture of the bench, the close arm is touching the UV filter I put on the lens.

10mm is a LOT of fun isn't it? I love my 10-22mm canon to death. Makes me feel like a "real" photographer again, like the old days with my 18mm lens on the film Nikon.

At first I thought your lens was showing significantly more barrel distortion than mine, but then I realized that both the bench's back and the kitchen counter are curved, right?

You seem to have an intrinisc feeling for how to use that lens's extreme wide angle to play with our spatial perceptions without grotesquely overdoing it. You're going to be very happy with what you start proiducing just a short ways down the road.

right

I believe that the only lens near this wide that will cover 1.3x and FF is the Sigma 12-24.

BUT it's not an EF-S mount, so you could still use it on your 1.3/FF camera...it just wouldnt produce a full frame picture at the widest end. I thought I had read somewhere that it would work from 12mm up on a FF camera, but I won't swear to that.

if that's true i might be able to squeeze out all the way to 10mm on a 1.3x crop... (dunno???)

From the article at ephotozine

Originally posted by ephotozine:

The lens is designated as a DC, meaning that it's designed exclusively for dSLR cameras with a crop factor of 1.5x or greater. However, we did try it on a Canon 1D, which has a crop factor of 1.3x and found that, without filters, it could be used from 11mm upwards without vignetting.

EDIT: They have a couple photos of the lens on a 1D used at 10mm as well, the vignetting is there, but pretty minor it looks like.

If anyone's interested (and patient), you can get the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens for $579 shipped from Dell. That's nearly $200 cheaper than B&H! Note that this lens will ONLY work on the Canon 20D and Digital Rebel models, and you'll probably wait 3-5 weeks for Dell to ship it.

The bench is curved, but the counter (if you're talking about the far left edge) is an illusion caused by the things that are obscuring part of the edge (the fruit, and the BOSE radio). If it is a different edge though, then it probably is distortion, all the kitchen is pretty square.

Ah, I see it now, yup. The radio chopped off a section, visually. On the whole I'm pretty impressed with the lack of distortion shown by this lens. It seems very sweet. How is it on edge-to-edge sharpness, especially int he corners at 10mm?

The crops were taken from this picture at 100%, and I didn't do any processing or resizing of them at all. The picture was taken handheld at 1/10s, f/10:

Is the lens out yet? /me checks BHPhoto. Says out of stock ... cool, it's shipping. I've been waiting for that lens to come out for a long time. It'll likely be my next purchase. I love wide angles, not fo lanscapes (would be nice too), but for the interesting perspective you can shoot.

Some more crops, done same way, this picture was taken wide open (f/4) and 1/30s:
