I've been told that many of you Pro's insure your camera equipment. It certainly sounds like a smart idea - I'm guessing the average pro bag contains upwards of 10K+ in camera/computer gear.
So how do you insure this? Do regular insurance companies have policies specifically for this type of thing? Sorry in advance if this is a really dumb question. |

I insured my through the same place as my home insurance. I was shocked to realize how cheap the insurance is too. Well worth the extra few bucks a month for the peace of mind knowing that your equipment is covered.
I just got a rider and provided them with the listing of the equipment I had and the total value. They then sum it up and provide you with a quote. Should anything happen I think you need to provide them with receipts of your stuff, so make sure you keep them.

I did the same thing with my little list of equipment I insured for $1000 (my laptop is already on a different rider), and it cost me something like $8 a YEAR!
I was told that it covers everything....even if I just drop it. |

| Yup... I think mine came to $28 a year for all my gear (and for some gear I plan on getting in the future). |

Be careful about insuring your equipment through your homeowner's policy if you also do business as a photographer. If you file a claim on your camera and they find out you are using it for business, they will be able to claim that since it is a part of the business, it should be insured under the business and refuse to pay on the claim.
Proceed at your own risk.

No business here... just for fun! But that is good to know, just in case I start making millions with my pics and go pro! :)

While there are private insurance companies that will give you general business insurance, often, the best coverage is available as a group plan through one of the professional organizations for pro photographers like WPPI, ASMP etc.
Another advantage is that these companies have some understanding of specific coverages needed by photographers.
