My 21yo son is about to go overseas for at least a year travelling and we are going to buy him a camera. His criteria is that's easy to use, good quality, quick response & compact.
He has been looking at the Kodak V550, but I have always thought of Kodak as "not quite as good as others". He had a Pentax previously and that fell apart a few months after he started travelling.
Would appreciate any comments.

I bought a Canon SD300 when i travelled around Australia and LOVED it! Its very compact, has a great picture and is just an overall amazing camera. Also you can store a good 400+ pics on a 1 gig card which makes it easy to manage all of your pics without worrying about loading them on to a computer every few days. It also has a nice metal exterior which makes it very rugged. My only suggestion would be to invest the extra $5 and get some screen protectors for the back.
Since the SD400 and SD500 came out the price has really dropped and you can find it for around $260 now on places like buydig.com.
Some examples:
