I really hate hiring really young people to work for me, please don't get insulted if you are under 25, but so far with the ones I have hired they have no decent work ethics!! They don't give a rats ass if they are on time or not, about the importance of thier job, or anything! i hired a young girl (18) about a month ago to be a Fitness Tech (basically all she has to do is make sure everybody is doing the equipment right) After I spend two weeks training her, she QUITS!!! JUST LIKE THAT! "Its too hard."-she says. URG!
Then I hire another one, this time 20 years old. I train her for 2 weeks and today she just thought she would stay home and watch TV? HELLO!! YOU HAVE A JOB!!! THAT MEANS GET YOUR SORRY ASS UP AND GO TO WORK!!! I FIRED her. Now I have to work tomorrow night! Damn it!!
Friday is my only day off and I had a photo shoot planned with a different girl that works for me. I am still going to go to her house and take pictures, but now I won't get home until about midnight.
I am done with the young ones for a while! All they want to do is talk on the phone and fix their hair. It's a gym?!!
ahhh...I feel better. This IS just a rant. I repeat..JUST A RANT. I don't hate younger people and I will probably being hiring more. All employees in general that do not care enough about their job to show up or they give up because they don't want to try just bug me. I feel that I am giving them a chance to do something new, I fully train them myself on health and fitness from scratch. Most of the time, they have no knowledge of fitness. When this happens to me, I get very upset because I feel like I have wasted time.

I think it's a symptom from a general lack of consideration for other people. Unfortunately, that is surely not limited to young people. Whatever happened to "doing the right thing?"
Sorry you have to work on your day off. I'd rant too!
by the way...did you used to have a different user name?

Doesnt it happen to people of other age as well?
Ranting is good. Get it off your chest, but please, dont discredit all young people just because you had a few bad ones. Maybe you should blame yourself for not hiring the right person for the job?

Well. I'd say you are real genuine entrepenuer. Good for you! Without people like you, we'd only have people like you're trying to deal with. Nice to hear from an asset to the real world, Mandy. Best of luck to you! |

I work in the food service sector - lots of young people there, and many are just like you describe. You need to convince them when you interview them that the job is hard work. Maybe then the lazy ones will pass!
There are some people out there willing to work. Not the majority of them though...

Well, I shouldn't say all young people. I did have a GREAT employee who was 20 years old. She left because she was accepted into nursing school. She did an awesome job. I was just ranting. You know how it is. |

Mandy,
Please forgive me for saying so, but generalisations are very dangerous. The real problem may be the person who decides to employ or not. That is the root or the real issue at hand. Obviously hiring 'the square'to fit 'the hole' will result in the frustration you are now experiencing.
Finding the right person for the right job is an art in the true sense of the word and should be left to those who mastered it. I always went through recruitment agencies which means if a person does not fit the bill they, the agence, must provide a replacement at no extra cost.
If you want I can PM you some general guidelines over the weekend that will guide you in selecting the right people. |

uhm...that's age discrimination -- not sure exactly what your profession is, or how you fit into hiring, but certainly you don't realize the harm in your statements. Basically, anyone in your area who is under the age of 25 that applies for a job with your work and is not hired now and is qualified, has a very probable chance of winning a lawsuit against you.
That being said, it's not just the 'younger' people that have problems at work. I am a commercial sales manager at a nationwide chain of parts stores -- I deal with people of all ages and must say that I fully disagree with your stereotype. I'm 23, and have been in the same position for two years...I've never been late for work, never called off sick, and I value my employment strongly.

Age discrimination only applies if you are 40 and up. |

That's fine. I was looking out for your well-being. Be prepared for any legal ramifications that you may incur from your statements. Personally, if I lived in Tennessee, I'd apply for the job...and the second you hired someone over the age of 25, I'd sue you...but I'm a twisted individual.

Do you own your own gym or do you just manage and do the hiring / firing? People always say they want to be their own boss and own their own business, but it carries a lot of hassle with it sometimes!

Yip, you can not wear the crown without carrying the cross as well.
It is good to go off sometimes and that's what friends are for.. to share the good and bad, to give warnings, advise and directions. And also to listen and learn.
Best luck, hope you have beter luck next time because there are some good people out there. |

My mother-n-law owns 4 and I run one of them. But I did just promote one employee to handle the personnel from now on. Taking care of the 700 members is enough. Dealing with employees stresses me out! Since they are all women (employees), there are cat fights now and then. |

On another note...I found out something interesting the other day...
The gym I go to has 40,000 members AT THAT ONE LOCATION. That means if only half of the people showed up to workout at one time, well...there'd be a long line.

My gym is for women only and is in a fairly small town. What gym do you go to? |

"Well, I see what's going on in here. I am smack dab in the middle of a good old fashioned cat fight."-- Petermen.
Sorry can't miss out on a Seinfeld Qoute..
Or as Kramer put it "Yeye--Catfight!"

Mandy, My condolences to your nerves. I've been in your shoes before, and will probably be in them again.
That said, I agree that there are some kids that just suck when it comes to their work ethic. Deapee, is also right. There are some that aren't bad at all. However, the bad ones are sooo bad that they overpower the good work done by the good employee.
Mandy is just venting about the most recent problems she's had. Discrimination happens no matter where you are. Be it age discrimination (whether old or young) or whatever, all people bring their past experiences with them to the hiring table. If someone has been burned by the same type of person in the past it will obviously make them more sensative in the future.
Rant away. You'll feel better for it. |

Of course employer's expect worker's on time or they're lousy employee's but seldom have any criticisms for when they keep worker's late?
just an interesting thing i've noticed in life...
one can be 5 minutes late to work repeatedly and called into the office for it, regardless of the fact that the same individual might work late 10-15 minutes a day. The latter is acceptable, even demandable to get the job done....but the first is heinous.....why????
